Definitely a pump, and .00 buck is my SD choice in a 12 gauge. It'd do the job - couple of shots to make sure the windshield is out of the way, couple more to make sure the threat is dealt with.
Agree. I have a small side-saddle on all my defensive shotguns; four shells. I keep slugs in the saddle and 00 in the tube. If something needs a single big hole--or if I run out of 00--I can hot-swap a slug. Never had to do it, but practice it regularly. I've known folks who stagger the charge in the tube, e.g., two 00 followed by a slug. But that never made sense to me and, worse, I can imagine a scenario where a slug was in the breach, I lost count under stress, and a slug is not what I expected to be launched.
