I shit you not: My dad bought me a Hi-Point 9mm for Christmas about 6 years ago. I'd say it was a nice thought, but given the failure rate - had I needed to use it for self-defense - I'd have been killed when it jammed...so it wasn't a good thought....at all.
Needless to say, I sold it and bought a Gen3 Glock 22, which I consider my first as it was the first pistol I ever purchased myself.
Colt Trooper MKIII .357 - bought from a gun shop in Sandhurst in 1975 while I was attending the Royal Military Academy. In England back in those days once you obtained your license (which in my case took 6 weeks) you could legally own something like that. Over the next few months I then spent too much of modest disposable income on ammunition shooting every Wednesday afternoon on one of the Academy ranges with a group of friends. I sold the gun just two years before the Conservative government rushed through the 1996 Handgun ban.
