The last pager I had used AAA batteries. Been a while.

Are the newer ones rechargeable lithium-ion? And can you actually force a small lithium battery to explode with that kind of force? I thought the "thermal runaway" effect was far more likely to cause combustion, not a literal explosion.

I've read a few sources that are claiming it was just malware, shorting a circuit or overheating a battery. Seems un-possible, not buying the physics on that. A small blasting cap, however -- 100% buying that, easily triggered by a small power source, such as those running pagers.

I’ve known of the dangers of pagers since the 1960’s.

One of the Anesthetists at our Hospital keyed his common frequency belt pager just in time to hear his own wife tell a young Surgeon which room to meet her in at the local motel.

    Very, very dangerous beeper-pager !

Funny the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon had his pager blow up at the same time. I'm sure it's just a coincidence.
Rumor has it that the pagers were sourced from Iran.

Party "I" starts shit with neighbor X, neighbor X retaliates thus giving cause to take party X's land. Pattern formed.

Don't need an explosive for lithium, just a 'shorting' circuit.
That can make the battery burn and some batteries pop from pressure (often it will just make the cell turgid), but it wouldn't blow the pager to bits or cause injury beyond maybe a small burn. Highly improbable to cause life threatening injury or kill someone. Vapes had a reputation for their batteries catching fire and popping for a while, but its not something I remember hearing anying die from.
