IMHO, they expected a retaliation from us over the missiles they had just launched a few hours ago, and they had the sensitivity maxed out on their missile defense system, which made it designate the airliner as a threat. I don’t believe they did it on purpose.

Why this flight and none of the other eight departures that occurred previous to this one (Ukrainian Air flight highlighted).

That shot of departures out of Tehran on the morning of doesn’t leave me with the feeling thy Iran was in a Weapons Free mentality.

Dallas radio reporting it. Had a woman investigator stated that there was 2 SAM's in the data they were looking at.

She didnt say what that data was.

    ETA: spy satellite data.

    Helotes!
Now, with the US citing ‘high confidence’ of SAM engagement, and knowing what those words mean with respect to our capabilities (as recently as 2016) to derive that type of information, I’m solidly in the camp of intentional act. The Iranians, if they have too, do still have the ability to pivot to ‘accidental engagement’ and summarily execute the button pusher. That may serve to quell any international anger that arises and wouldn’t need to share that message inside of Iran.

Don't underestimate the incompetency of the Iranian military!

As for the other airliners leaving Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport that day, this particular flight left an hour later than scheduled. Could have been a factor.

Best read and pictures I have found on the Interwebz here:

PPRuNe isn’t the Private Pilot Rumor Network for no reason at all.

Regarding the hour delay, there’s a couple of theories, yet to be proven out. I’m leaning towards an Iran ATC departure hold, but not ruling out a maintenance delay...were it that, I would have expected the airline itself would have the data to support it. That could be released by the airline and would be expected to be included in the accident investigation report.

Admittedly, for me this is an example of Occam’s razor and seeing which way the Iranians spin it is more telling, I think, than anything else.

As for Iranian incompetence, I’m not saying it’s implausible, but let’s find a SCIF and compare notes on IRIAF IADS doctrine and employment.

Fox 26 Houston was reporting that it was definitely a mechanical issue yesterday morning.
Major shifts in that line of thinking today. Multiple outlets showing "video proof" of a missile striking the airliner. Now, I don't find the video compelling, but once PM Blackface piles on...
    Pretty well over.
