Everyone should have a dog that is good at staying alert.

Yes, Dogs are the best first layer of home defense.

Mine can hear and some how smell things outside.
The male GSD thinks he's king of the kingdom.
Will run down and kill any critter that's walks or crawls out of the "swamp".
The others join in. However, He seems to like most people.
I can count on 1 hand the number of people he has meet in his entire life that he immediately DID NOT LIKE.
So I trust his judgement. He on guard day and night.
He sleeps on a mat in our bedroom door way such that he can see down the hallway.

All others dogs are picking up his protection instincts and barking alarms.
They can hear or smell everyone just walking down the road even when window blinds are closed.
All vehicles, They even know the sound of ours before you can see them coming.

We installed this in our previous home. It was a slab ranch like lots of homes here. So windows were low and accessible. They WILL still get in if they want to. But it slows them down ALOT. That gives you time to wake up, and arm up. It also buys time for any responders to get there sooner if your not home, and your alarm triggers. We used a local company, and did 12 windows and 3 full light doors for $2000. We were hit after the install and the guy had to remove the entire sash to get in.
