So from the OP's description of the attempt to buy. He had a DL, LTC, Visa/I94, a hunting license and credit card that didn't have matching names on them. He was from Mexico. He answered one of the qualifying questions wrong and he's wondering why they didn't sell him a gun?

    Seems reasonable to me

Got my Glock at Academy. Did the paper work, they ran a back ground
check and 30 minuets after I got there, I walked out with the Glock and several boxes of 40 caliber ammo.

This was about 5 years ago and I haven't bought anything else from them except ammo. My other guns have come from members, which I prefer.

"This is the first time in my life I've ever tried to purchase a firearm. Only firearm-related things I've bought at Academy is ammo and a holster."

A holster for a gun you don't own since this is the firearm you have tried to buy??? What kind of ammo does this phantom gun shoot that you also bought ammo for?

Not a fan of Academy by no means, this sounds like BS

My one, only and last experience of purchasing a firearm at Academy was several years ago on fairly new release.
My local gun shop said he could order it but no idea on delivery and I needed by Christmas.
Well after much consideration found it in stock at our local store. I swear from the time I walked to the firearms counter and told the man what I wanted and he checked stock, immediately things changed. I was suspect and suspicious to them it seemed. I am LTC holder and that didn’t seem to ease the situation at all or lighten the mood or experience. After all the paperwork and financials I was immediately escorted to the front door and told I had leave with the firearm.
It was the most time consuming and cold firearm purchase I have ever made. And it will not be repeated again.
    Yes. They are strange.

I've bought small pistol primers from them when I could find them any where else. First time they said they had them and they were out when I got there. Drove 60 miles to the nearest store. I later made a 2nd trip and actually got 500 primers, that was all they would sell one purchaser.

Later I saw they had them on line and placed an order for 1 carton, the system accepted that, there was no limit indicated. When I got to the store it seemed that every official in the store had to approve it. It took 20 or 30 minutes for them to give the OK to "let me have them". I have on line suppliers that don't make me go through a bunch of hoops.

A few years ago, I did buy a .308 rifle from them. The ATF form was by computer not paper form, fortunately I got an old guy to wait on me and it was no problem to get it filled out.

It is not my kind of store.

I do buy ammo there from time to time though. I had a laugh one day when the skinny kid at the register was unable to lift the ammo I plopped down with one hand. He looked like a woke progressive and it gave me a good laugh but apparently he didn't think it was too funny. Them bullets is heavy!

Too much soy milk for the little guy

After they already left the store?
    He mentioned TWIC,

    "

    TWIC

"The Transportation Worker Identification Credential, also known as TWIC®, is required by the Maritime Transportation Security Act for workers who need access to secure areas of the nation’s maritime facilities/vessels, and others who require a TWIC®. TSA conducts a security threat assessment (background check) to determine a person’s eligibility and issues the credential."

TSA conducts the background check. Recently I read about TSA have a $$$$ list, that is not really on the no fly list, but is on the harass list. People who are not in sync with the current administration. So it is an expansion of the database for political leaning. Not saying I know for sure, but it is possible.
