No training or SOP would tell officers to shoot a round into the ground to alert other officers to something. That's what radios are for. But, the real question is why wasn't the operations center relaying messaging from the local LE to the USSS guys. Hopefully it is all recorded and released at some point.

FYI, we keep hearing the radios weren’t on the same frequency; or, otherwise weren’t working. It was an unpredicted situation, not anticipated or prepared for.

Word is the Secret Service deleted the recordings. The stupidest CYA strategy, to cap off a string of failures.
Many stupid occurrences have come into the public arena (as it were) prior to during and after the event...many of us could not conceive of the possibilities that we are becoming aware of and many tried not to believe knowing that these things were infact at least possible.
It's all a nasty cold ugly realization. Much like Dallas in 63 things are too awful to believe. Some still don't want to believe. Goodnight.

Would've caused a "rapid response" within the crowd, too. A stampede is not going to improve the security situation, will pull attention away from protecting the protectee (particularly the snipers - who would immediately focus on the shooter in the crowd rather than the shooter on the roof), and is guaranteed to create a mass casualty event. "No harm to the crowd"? People would be trampled to death. And the it could create more opportunities for shots at the real target.

It's not a "no brainer" in the way you think it is.
General, wasn't and isn't a scenario any of those so-called security folks on the ground ever prepared for. We've already been made aware of their failures. I just believe a few shots into the ground may have saved a future president's life. If a stampede happened (which it didn't) and caused a few aches and pains, so be it.

Well, Please tell us just how well their “training” or SOP’s were working at the moment ?

“Desperate times call for desperate actions’’ seems to fit their situation, No ?

I’m hearing that the unusual behavior of the ‘’shooter’’ was reported to Police some 90” before our President was shot.

There's one pretty fair truth to this shit show of a thread.

A shot INTO THE GROUND, YES !

The noise would have caused instant protection of Trump.

We saw the results of their following procedures, didn’t we ?

Shooting a gun in the crowd would have caused a mass panic, a stampede, EVEN MORE distraction to the already uncoordinated gaggle of Secret Service, local cops and DHS, and would have raised the body count nicely.

What you've done is figured out a way it could have been even worse. Great job.

"A few aches and pains", huh? Good to know a few trampling deaths of a few innocent people is A-OK in your book. A stampede didn't happen because the shots weren't fired from inside the crowd. Close range gunshots are a great way to create a panic in a crowd of thousands.

Should have called in some A10 Warthogs for close-air-support when his drone went up.

An A-10 could have used its LITENING pod to spot the shooter, then hit him with his Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System. There’s no reason this shouldn’t have been available.
