Wouldn't work sadly, don't think anyone's ever gotten a rifle round to top 5000 fps.

Way off. Those Aquilla rounds with no powder are as loud as a pellet gun, with a lot more punch. Henry rifle, good scope, Aquila round = lots of dead squirrels.

    30 carbine was STUPID.

Seem to remember the troops needed a close quarters gun, and they developed it for that need in the 40's. It was the shiznit when it came out. Just a nostalgia thing now, much like the M-14 and the Garand.

There are much better weapons in those calibers currently made, but the nostalgia factor comes around.

I didnt see anyone mention the 38 S&W. The case is a good 1/4 inch shorter than the 38 Special.

Subsonic .22 is generally more accurate. Mid-velocity stuff is transonic and gets bounced around by the shock wave that wants to form (the same effect that killed people who tried going supersonic before Yeager managed it.) Higher velocity is supersonic, but just barely, and given how non-aerodynamic .22 bullets are, they can wind up dropping transonic before they get to the target.

I'd love for someone to start loading spitzer bullets in .22 LR...

Ok, I'm wrong. .38 S&W isn't the parent for the Special.

Still; predates the Special and is actually a suitable self defense caliber, even if it is basically bare minimum for that. It's on par with .380 ACP power-wise, the Brits used it in their issue side-arm until they adopted the Browning (they used .38 S&W through Korea). Given the caliber was designed in the day of break-action revolvers that would have probably failed catastrophically with anything as stout as a .38 Special, it had its place.

I had a S&W model 36-1 in .38 S&W for a few months before I traded it away. It was actually pleasant to shoot for a pocket revolver, didn't beat you up.

I'd have to agree with Grass hopper about the 17-50 being the MOST useless, mostly because there has never been a rifle chambered to fire it.
