I guess literally anything qualifies as a varmint round now.

Well, I was just curious what all everyone was using. So if someone wants to use a 30-30 it’s good with me.

25-06, and the slightly slower .257 Roberts are actually great varmint rounds.

Yeah, I tend to think of varmints generally from prairie dogs to coons, with coyotes on the upper end of the spectrum.

Prairie dogs thru coons 22lr, coyotes thru deer 30-30. In my 70 plus years I have taken all my Tx deer with a 30-30.

    Yep.

I show that picture every time I hear someone tell me how a .50 BMG will blow you in half or rip your arm off from a near miss.

It just punches little holes. If I had a lathe I would probably do something stupid like turn some Amax in to Vmax.

Gonna have to do some of that enginerding math to figure out just the right amount of material to remove for maximum fragmentation in thin skinned varmints and not at the moment it exits the barrel.

For inside the city limits, dense townhouse complex, end unit, a crazy bird pecking into my attic...

.22 short in a bolt action did the job, shooting from ground level, bullet into attic siding

air rifle would have been better and safer but I was young and stupid

patched the attic from the inside several times but he kept coming back

In the past 21 years on my place, I've killed more squirrels, armadillos, jackrabbits, coons, skunks, porcupines, possums, fox, and bobcat with a 12ga shotgun than anything else. What I haven't shot with the 12ga have mostly been shot with a 22LR or 9mm pistol cause that is what I had with me. I've only ever had the opportunity to dispatch snared coyotes, hogs, and another bobcat, and those I put down with a 9mm. I don't have much patience for sitting or calling, but I used to have a border collie that loved to hunt, especially at night, so most of my night kills were coons, porcupines, possums, and fox in trees. My current dog ain't so good...

As a kid I used to get paid by neighbors occasionally to take out Prairie Dogs and Coyotes. Settled on .22 Hornet for PDs and .257 Roberts for Cs. Had no clue about ballistics, just got what they had at Gebo's. Worked pretty good most of the time. Cold weather seemed to make it harder but I still made a little $.
