Not so much the absolute best, but what is your choice for varmints?

I went with .223. Bullets are cheap, brass is everywhere, and it was easy to put together and accurate AR. Struck me the right balance of cost, convenience, and terminal performance for my needs.

Since I mostly use it at night performance past a few hundred yards isn’t really an issue for me.

    Out here by the lake!
Depends on the varmint! Back home I shot a lot of ground hogs with a .308. While on vacation I killed tons of prairie dogs with a .22. By definition feral hogs are varmints. I've killed them with .22 to 12 gauges.

Whatever gun is at hand. For me it’s primarily 308. Don’t care what shape the varmints in after its shot. I just want it dead.

#1 choice is .22lr, but out past a couple hundred yards I switch to .223

Mine is a cobbled together mess with a Ballistic Advantage .223 Wylde barrel.

Getting plenty of accuracy for my use with mixed brass, minimal prep, and 55gr Dogtown or TNT.

I'm not much of an ar guy so for me its not guns in 22 creed with 90gr vld at 3350fps or 80gr eld at 3500fps or a 223ai with an 80gr eld at 2970fps. Both will kill larger critters just fine too but they are more "varmint" style rounds.

That carnage is kinda depressing for a 50. Here's a few from the 22 creed. Raccoons at 289yds and a yote at 200.

    Yep.

I show that picture every time I hear someone tell me how a .50 BMG will blow you in half or rip your arm off from a near miss.

It just punches little holes. If I had a lathe I would probably do something stupid like turn some Amax in to Vmax.

I'm still waiting for the bolt carrier group, and charging handle. I'll begin optics selection soon. It's built on a spare, Six8 contract upper from LWRC, so I can use my Six8 lower, and the special Pmags and have zero feeding problems. I think I'll add an A2 buttstock to that particular lower.

And yes, I've plugged the forward assist.

.257 Roberts, but the .25-44 Sharps, or the .350 Legend, may be the next!
