It doesn't have to be the most practical choice, just what you happen to enjoy shooting/owning/collecting the most.

Mine would be the SKS, of course. Not a modern weapons system by any means, but there's something about them that's really cool to me. The SKS was a fascinating intermediary/stopgap between the "old school" bolt action service rifles and modern assault rifles.

A medium length barrel, a .30 caliber intermediate cartridge, semiautomatic only operation, volley sights, an internal magazine fed by clips, with a slightly extended (10 round) magazine capacity, cleaning rod attached below the barrel and cleaning kit stuffed inside the "butthole" of the stock. I like the fact that it can be easily single loaded if you don't have stripper clips. And who doesn't love fold-out bayonets? Plus, cheap ammo (until recently, that is) in a caliber that can still pack a punch with well-designed projectiles.

With a Yugo, 'Yu get' even more cool little features packed into the rifle - night sights (which may or may not still glow), gas shut off, and a friggin' rifle grenade launcher and grenade sights. I just think that's really cool, even if it doesn't have a practical use for us.

I just really enjoy all my SKSs, both shooting and collecting them, though it wouldn't be my go-to platform for a SHTF scenario.

And a brief PSA: FFS, stop trying to make your SKSs into AKs.
I'm not much of an SKS fan, but I respect and can relate to your reasoning.
I appreciate the uncommon old designs rarely seen in today's AR laden market. I especially like manual actions; lever and pump. As for semiauto, I love my M1 Carbine and I've been lusting for a M14/M1A some day when I find a good deal on one,

AR, mostly because I’m not too familiar with other platforms.

But I like the modularity, they’re basically Legos for gun guys.

Any and all non tactical , AR configured or mislsurp.
Tactical= hate the look and pistol grips don't belong rifles.
ARs- clunky pin together guns and most uncomfortable gun to shoot depending on sight arraingement.
    Milsurps= Milsurps

The situation will determine the platform. I have many, depending on what I'm wanting from it.
This^^^ Hell I make up situations in my head to come up with a reason own something different. I have a "bear defense" gun. Never seen a bear in my life that wasn't in a cage. I plan too though. Mostly it comes down to if I don't have one I want it.

I like the AR-15 for it's modularity and versatility in caliber and conformation, and for the availability of accessories. It can be just about anything you want it to be... even a bolt gun, or a .410 shotgun... if that's what you want it to be. It doesn't even have to have a pistol grip...

AR platform hands down. Accuracy that rivals bolt gun, capacity that can't be beaten and modularity that allows me to piece almost any 2 together to make a functional weapon. Add in the caliber choices and enjoy. Don't get me wrong, a lever action probably brings the most smiles especially when I've got a similarly chambered pistol around but the AR is a timeless piece of machinery.

I like 20 inch A2/A4 rifles. 5.56 just seems to work better from a 20 to me.
Agree about the 20" barrels. You get higher velocity and therefore much better terminal ballistics, not to mention accuracy. IMO, the extra 4" over a carbine doesn't really encumber you all that much and it's worth it. And if it aint chrome-lined, I don't want it.

As for accuracy, not entirely. With irons, you do get a longer sight radius, but optics it won't matter. On paper a shorter barrel should be stiffer, and thus more accurate
