The best professors I had in college were retired from the private sector. They taught for fun and were universally panned by the intellectuals who had never worked a real job in their life. I took a management course from a retired VP of Aramco Oil. He had an insight few of the staff could match.

I have some really good ones like that quite often. I had a microeconomics teacher sophomore year that preached the hell out of bottom up capitalism every day, I voted for him as prof of year.

Your principles should be based on thought ouc reason and prayer. The reality is that other points of view exist, and you should learn to deal with those people professionally.

Shoot, its college. Enjoy it. It is so much better than real life.

Why would you be enraged over a class offered to folks that you are not required to take? Even if you had to take it, being exposed to alternative and opposite points of view is educational and better prepares you for the world.

    Enraged? Really?

This. I have a degree in Sociology, as part of my studies I took a 500 level Women's Studies class. Getting a well rounded educational experience is only going to allow you to be a better educated individual in the long run.

If anything I would be more apt to take that class just for the information of it. If you get to see life from several points of view, your arguements against one point becomes more relavent due to the experience. The garbage spued on campus is irritating and ignorant, but they are basically offering you some insight into their beliefs which is far from a bad thing, it is always best to understand someone's stance before you pick it apart and knock it. Now, on a small scale, where EVERYONE participates (because that happens so much...), socialism is actually pretty appealing, but the idea of a form of socialism working in the U.S. is insanity.

lol....my wife is a social worker and as conserative as they come. she holds people to task and tries to help them dig out of their shitty situation by teaching them self reliance and responsibility for ones own actions.
do we have FAR FAR too many "social safety nets"?

    yes, indeed we do.

but, people who think that we are better off with zero social worker types are ignorant of the reality of the situation.

You've got to understand then the dominant liberalness to the social worker field. After hearing conversations about her internship is sounds to me like they throw out public money as much as possible.

Sorry dude but your wife seems like a pretty big exception, we need more like her.

I will never forget a Prof I had in a MBA class. He was a retired AF officer, was an aide to a Colonel or General. He said they mostly flew around the country making inspections. His job was to scout out the local golf courses for his officer, set up tee times.

But the guy was a computer whiz, for the time. I forget the title of the class, but I learned more about computers from him than anywhere. All reports and tests were on computer, unheard of at the time, the early 90's.

this was kind of my thought - and really, if you want to be able to best defend your point of view - get to know the opposing view REALLY well

Sorry guys I'd rather not spend money on a class that I don't agree with. There are plenty of acceptable alternatives.

that is your choice of course, but if you only listen to people who sound like yourself, you cant really gain any insight.

i agree that social work is a liberal field, but I get a kick out of the extreme views here. Many things are helpful in moderation.

I do hear enough liberal perspective here though. I really don't need that class for the insight into the liberal disease. I came to college a one issue voter, pro gun. I now am more conservative than ever, but I'm not very authoritarian. I'm tea party basically

i always thought a message board circle jerk - was posting something and then having a host of cheerleaders responding in kind - never posting anything contrary to the original post

so you didnt want any comments that were disagreeable to your post?

I have to agree with "just jk" here. There is no reason to be "enraged" about a particular class being offered at your institution. I think it is even a bit far to call liberalism a "disease". People nowadays cant accept that viewpoints other than their own exist. I also agree that the best way to argue for your view is to know the opposing view as flawlessly as you know your own.

    My 2 cents.

I would only agree with you to a point. There comes a time when someone espouses beliefs that are so offensive to another that their positions on things do become "disease" to the fabric of society. I don't care what anyone says, promotion of same sex marriage is not natural nor normal, and is only detrimental to society as a whole. Why not bring back child marriage while we're at it? Why not, it's just another alternative lifestyle, isn't it? Liberalism is not a disease, but too many of their beliefs are disease to a normal, healthy society.
