    Out here by the lake!
Incredibly poor training on the part of the drilling contractor. Not much better in BP.

With even marginal training, the blowout would never have occurred.
I have a friend that is a senior driller off shore. He never cared to work for BP because of their lack of safety procedures. He actually worked for Trans Ocean for a short time & loved it.

As you probably remember, BP America came about by BP's purchase of Amoco. And Amoco had a horrible safety culture. Amoco couldn't spell safety if you spotted them the first six letters. BP has not been very successful in changing that inherited culture.

That is a huge issue, when during the mergers and acquisitions process, it is determined they want to keep the same experience base, employees and managers to maintain the same profitability, but those people have no loyalty to the new company. During most mergers and acquisitions, the majority of the employee base either leaves abruptly, or gets slowly transitioned out. The purchasing company has an uphill battle bringing the current employees up to the new HSE standard. When you start with a company like Amoco, which was the last of "the majors" to hold onto the old way of doing things, and try to transition to a global company with a massive HSE standard, it's tough to make any progress without losing all the "legacy" employees.

With all due respect, you have no idea what you are talking about. That is not even close to what caused Macondo. They were very well trained. Poor equipment maintenance, following retarded orders and abiding by retarded policies and chain of command it what happened. 99% of what you saw in the Hollyweird flick with Marky Mark is bullshit.

With all due respect, I was trained by one of the best majors in detecting and controlling kicks. Spent time on the floating rigs as a drilling engineer. Have been on the drill floor, and from the moon deck to the derrick. Helped teach the well control school at a major oil company's test rig.

I have read the actual accounts and reports, have not seen the movie. They were getting way more flow out than they were pumping into the well. They were clueless and did not respond to the kick until way too late. They should have closed in much earlier, read the standpipe pressure, calculated the required mud weight, weighted up the mud and started circulating bottoms up.

    From the investigation report:
"The rig crew's first apparent well control actions occurred after the hydrocarbons were rapidly flowing to the surface. The rig crew did not recognize the influx and did not act to control the well until hydrocarbons had passed through the BOP into the riser."

That well was screaming "I'm kicking" and the crew did not do anything.

Was the equipment not well maintained? No, it was not. But even so a properly trained crew could have easily controlled the kick.

With due respect, you either don't know what happened or you have inadequate training.
