I witnessed a doctor tell my sister that he preferred for his older patients to carry extra body fat because it absorbed some impact during a fall. His basic premise was "fat kills you slowly but a broken hip can take you out in short order."

I've often wondered how many doctors feel that way. I can see the logic of it. I also know that I've never seen a fat 100-year-old. So there are competing priorities to be weighed.
