Urban legend is that Dirty Harry actually used a Model 57 due to them not being able to find Model 29’s.

Truth is that they did have model 29’s. You can see it stamped .44 Magnum on the barrel in some shots. They contacted someone at SW who managed to build them three for filming, as the guns were hard to find at the time.

That may or may not be true. It would be dependent upon the modification made and whether or not it was determined to be an unsafe one that at least in part lead wrongly to the death of a person. That is true of any mechanical device that later winds up being the cause of death in a homicide or of injury in an injury tort claim. It is essentially the same as for failing to maintain a mechanical device, in proper working order, as well.
