Yes sir, It is a Mark 1 Trench knife, WWI era. They were made very late in the war so a lot sat in government storehouses to be issued in WWII before the adoption of the M3 Trench Knife.
You do gain a few inches of reach with a baton though, but I think your probably right with a determined/charging attackerA knuckle duster and the knowledge of how to throw proper punches would be far more effective to ending a confrontation than an expandable baton.
