His father walked out when Vance was a toddler. He eventually took the surname of the grandparents that had been, essentially, his parents. I think after his father left his mother went with a different surname. From memory; I'd had to look up specifics. But he detailed it all in his book.

I tend to agree. I don't think it's going to pull in a lot more votes (except for people who know a little about him, read his book, etc.), but as far as future presidents go, a very good pick.
