Past 65 or 70, the skin on the back of hands gets very thin & delicate. I often wear ‘’gardeners’ gloves’’ for protection now.

<>FYI, I find it easier to rack a slide if i use the whole hand to grip the slide over the top. The fingers on one side and the heel of the hand on the other. The thumb does nothing. Also it helps to grab the side and push the frame forward rather than pulling the slide. Turn your body sideways to keep the muzzle pointed down range and hold the gun close to your chest, pushing from right to left.
When my osteoarthritis flares, it simply will not be ignored and my left hand becomes close to useless. I've been using the grip exercisers for years, but strength loses out to "Old Arthur Itis" every time.
