Remarkable effort! Did you happen to chronograph any of the rounds?

It would be interesting to see what the difference in velocity variation translates into round-to-round accuracy.

    Be well!

Very good write up and ammo test. Thanks for taking the time, effort, and expense to do this.

Great info. I would like to point out that the last chart (the summary) on the link is covering some of your commentary.

I believe it pertains to the charging handle theory.

Ugh, thanks for the head's up. I'm working on it and will post up when it's fixed.

    Is a new link required?

When I clicked the original one, I had the same problem.

I tried that when I originally looked at it after you said it was fixed, but it was a no go.

Just tried again and still the same issue.

I am linking to it from my phone on Tapatalk, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I will check it out when I am on the laptop when I have a chance.

Thanks again for undertaking this endeavour, and sharing your results. I certainly appreciate it and enjoyed it.

Just an FYI: I spent some time this morning cleaning up a few things; re-wording a few awkward phrases, correcting a few typo's, making the pictures clickable to enlarge, etc. No changes to the results or anything, just a little housekeeping. This project has been my first foray into creating a website so I'm very much a noob at it.

    Howdy folks,

I tested eight brands/types of .22LR ammo today. Sorry, but no big write-up with color pictures and all that, just the facts…

All were standard velocity, shot with my 10/22 (modified, but still original barrel, stock, etc.), Nikon Target EFR scope set on 9X, from a bench with sandbags, at 50 yards, five-shot groups. Wind was somewhat constant from the south (blowing down-range) around 7-10 mph.

For all of those with short attention spans I’ll list my average group sizes first and then specific measurements for each group and some conclusions farther down.

    Aguila Super Extra Subsonic: 0.98”
Aguila Super Extra Standard Velocity: 1.01”
    Aguila Rifle Match: 1.21”
    Aguila/Golden Eagle Target: 1.00”
    Eley Sport (Aguila): 1.06”
    Eley Team: 0.67”
    Eley Target: 0.79”
    CCI Standard Velocity: 0.78”

Here are the specific measurements for each group:

Aguila Super Extra Subsonic, ten groups:
    1 1/2”, 1 3/8”, 7/8”, 3/4”, 1”, 1”, 3/4”, 5/8”, 7/8”, 1”

Aguila Super Extra Standard Velocity:, ten groups:
    5/8”, 1”, 1 1/4”, 1”, 1”, 1 1/4”, 3/4”, 1”, 1”, 1 1/4”

    Aguila Rifle Match, ten groups:
    1”, 1 1/2”, 7/8”, 1”, 3”, 7/8”, 3/4”, 1 1/8”, 3/4”, 1 1/4”

    Aguila/Golden Eagle Target, ten groups:
    3/4”, 3/4”, 1 5/8”, 7/8”, 1”, 1 3/8”, 5/8”, 7/8”, 5/8” 1 1/2”

    Eley Sport, eight groups:
    1”, 7/8”, 3/8”, 1 1/4”, 2”, 1 1/2”, 3/4”, 3/4”

    Eley Team, six groups:
    5/8”, 5/8”, 5/8”, 3/4”, 5/8”, 3/4”

    Eley Target, six groups:
    3/4”, 5/8”, 3/4”, 1”, 1”, 5/8”

    CCI Standard Velocity, eight groups:
    3/8”, 3/4”, 7/8”, 7/8”, 1 1/8”, 3/4”, 7/8”, 5/8”

In the Aguila Rifle Match I had one group that strung out all over the place, coming in at 3” (and I know it wasn’t me!). If I remove that one group I get an average of 1.01”. It seems all of the Aguila standard velocity ammo, including the “Eley” Sport which they make, all shoots almost exactly the same in my rifle, about 2 MOA. Good to know for future purchases.

The Eley Team was from a friend that found two bricks of it in his house and had no idea he had it. As far as I know Eley doesn’t make it anymore. The Eley Target shoots pretty well, and at only six groups each it could have done just as well as the Team on a different day. Time will tell.

The CCI Standard Velocity continues to hold it’s own really well, matching the performance of the Eley Target at just over 1.5 MOA. If I can get the CCI-SV at $50 a brick (or less) instead of the $70 per brick I paid for the Target I’m definitely OK with that.

    Good shooting everyone!
