    Out here by the lake!
I didn't get that far. I was 14ish, and wasn't calling the shots. We were going to stay the weekend, but it was winter and the weather was crap, so we only stayed the one day..
My wife had to go to Chicago for the company she was working for. She got a hold of my dad inn Joliet and he actually drove up to meet her. My dad hated going to Chicago, but he showed up and they went to Shedd's Aquarium ad even took her out to dinner.

Maybe not so silly. Part of the tour showed the working conditions underground. The early workers worked by candlelight, but candles were expensive, so they used them to get set up, but worked mostly in the dark. Later came carbide lamps. High tech!
I used a carbon lamp for sight black.

I don't go into anything I can't walk out of.....
Being an electrician leads to crawling into all sorts of uncomfortable, tiny locations. Crawl spaces under block and beam construction. Out into the eves in a shallow roofed ranch. There's nothing quite like tunneling like a mole through rock wool insulation. Or hanging by your toes upside down in a trench trying to fix a pipe, or dig out that last big rock. Often alone and miles from phone service or help.

I went into the salt mine in Hutch, 600 feet down. Interesting well organized trip. Lots of left over equipment, rode around in a nice elec. cart. Elevator ride was OK, not too jerky. Never worried.
That tourist trap was open back in the 80s, never went in. Did pan the creek with the kids - suspect it was 'salted' - found a few 'flakes'. Also did the Ar diamond field - didn't find anything.

I've been to Crater of Diamonds twice myself. The first time was 100f with 100% humidity. I sat on an old stump in the shade and got chiggers in places you don't want them. Ever had to go to CVS at 11 pm for RID head lice spray for your undies? 0/10, don't recommend.
The second time was a lot more pleasant. We stayed a few days in the fall. It was cooler and I didn't get any chiggers. Didn't find a darn thing either time..

The ghost and the darkness is a damn good movie.
On my first safari I was hunting near Kruger Park stalking on a huge waterbuck that was the harem bull, he was busy mating as many females as he could. My hunting buddy stayed behind in the hunting truck as it was after brunch and he was nodding out. The driver/ tracker pointed out 3 lions that were stalking me and the PH. They got spooked off when a few Cape buffalo ran past us. The PH was visibly shook up and ask if I knew how close we came to dying as he shotgunned 2 beers. I just thought that was part of the adventure of hunting in Africa.

Honeymooned in Cozumel. The beach bar made amazing top-shelf margaritas and had a 2-1 special during happy hour. We started chatting with the other patrons and mentioned we just had gotten married. Few of them sent drinks over, but instead bartender doubled those orders due to special...we soon each had 4 in front of us, plus the one we ordered. Not wanting to offend, we drank the agave concoctions.

7am the next morning we were in rough shape and was our scheduled cenote dive, which required taking a ferry, a bus, then trek through the rainforest. Wife wanted to bail, but I wouldn't let her- gave her some dramamine as she was green-tinged on the boat. Staggered through the rainforest to find a hut next to a water-filled huge hole in the ground.

Dive was amazing and well worth the effort. Water was crystal clear and other worldly. Next day a cat 3 hurricane passed directly overhead- Roxane. This was pre-cruise ship Cozumel so Island was not as developed as now. Our waterfront room had got blown-out and we met a couple of producers from CNN who were on their first night of their honeymoon- they kindly let us stay in their room as it was habitable. Great trip- had a blast.

Went aboard a deisel boat with a friend, duck your head, it's cramped. Nothing like the movies. Went aboard an SSBN once - very spacious.

I seen a while back that they enclosed the U505 inside a building. I'm sure that I was inside the U boat but cannot remember anything about it.

I remember it but not as much I would like to have, I was probably 10 when I saw it - we used to make a lot of trips to Chicago. I still make a LOT of trips to Chicago but always for business now, not enough time to "play" - but it's on my list to go see again now that I'm in my 50's! LOL

    Here's great info / history on U-505:
