3D-printed gun designer Cody Wilson gets probation in child sexual assault case
Wilson pleaded guilty to injury of a child and will be required to register as a sex offender.www.texastribune.org
Despite His Criminal Record, Cody Wilson Is Back in the 3D-Printed Gun Business
Cody Wilson, the self-described anarchist and figurehead of the 3D-printed gun movement, led investigators on an international manhunt last year before being arrested and charged with having sex with a minor. In August, he struck a deal with Travis County prosecutors, pleading guilty to a lesser...www.thetrace.org
This is the guy behind Defense Distributed - the file sharing organization that shares 3D printable guns. The "lolberts" - the hardcore libertarians - and a bunch of other 2A activists are celebrating this guy and defending him and his actions - dude pleaded down his child sex abuse charges to 3rd degree felony injury of a child.
He was arrested because he hired a hooker who turned out to be 16 - met her in Austin at a coffee shop, took her to the hotel for the dirty deed, took her to Whataburger, gave her $500 and then split. I guess he was going for the "girlfriend experience" or something.
Thing is - his 16 year old hooker then called the cops and pushed sex abuse charges. Dude was arrested in Taiwan - depending on the rag you read some say he was fleeing the country because he knew of the charges, others just said he was traveling internationally. The guy is a UT law school drop out. He knew what he was doing. His defense was he didn't know she was under 17 because he met her thru a website called SugarDaddyMeet.com which requires users to check a box stating they're 18 or older. We all know no one lies about their age to get on sites they're not supposed to be on, right?
So as part of his plea deal - he has to register as a sex offender, he got 7 years of probation - but the state considers his case to be "deferred" so long as he fulfills his obligations during his probation - so under Texas law he's not prohibited from owning firearms. He can't carry anymore, he is a federally prohibited person - but it seems he's still good to go under TX law.
The whole mess is it seems that one of the articles I read has a little ring of truth - they let him plead sexual assault charges down to just "injury of a child" - and people accuse Travis County of being lenient on sex offenders. I get creeper vibes from the guy, and unless this girl is just super developed, super tarted up, and homeboy wasn't looking all that closely at her face and other cues teenagers will give off - he should've suspected she wasn't legal. The whole "but the website makes you say you're 18" - yeah. McLovin's ID said he was 21 as well. Maybe she was just a really mature 16 year old. This mess happened in 2019 - so she'll be 19 this year. They shouldn't be "deferring" convictions - enter the conviction as it stands, make them complete the sentence, then seek expungement. I generally don't have a problem restoring the gun rights of felons - but if you're on probation/parole I'm OK with not having access to weapons as part of those conditions. Serve the sentence, then get restored.
The charges being brought in the first place smack to me of mom & dad finding out what happened, or seller's remorse - but the line between "legal" and "under age" needs to be firm. Texas already has a lower-than-average age of consent for the US. Doesn't need to go lower. "But she said she was 18" is the war cry of perverts everywhere. I don't have sympathy for child-diddlers, even when the "child" is a teenager who can give their consent - legally, she cannot consent. Ignorance of the law isn't an excuse - and ignorance of proper age when it comes to banging a minor shouldn't be. Dudes should be thinking harder with the big brain when dealing with young girls. To quote Chris Rock "If a woman tells you she's twenty and looks sixteen, she's twelve. If she tells you she's twenty-six and looks twenty-six, she's damn near forty" - dude would've saved himself a lot of money and not eaten a felony if he was hunting cougar, not kitten.
Yup!I don't think I've looked it up in over a decade. Thanks for the info. The last time I checked, it was 17, so obviously things have changed.
Hell, I remember when strip clubs used to advertise that they employed 17-year-olds. And in other states, where the age of consent was 16, they advertised that they employed 16-year-olds.
As dancers, of course. If you were under 18, you couldn't be a server because that would require you to handle alcohol and you had to be 18 to do that.
So you couldn't be a waitress until you were 18 but you could give lap dances at 17, 16 in some states.
Is it just me or do the internal inconsistencies in various bodies of law make them really, really confusing?
PS - Yes, I'm aware that the minimum age for working any job in a strip club in Texas was recently changed to 21.
Either she was under 17, or this didn't happen in Texas - unless she was mentally retarded or otherwise incapable of consent. You don't usually get 19 years for 'statutory rape' either! If you folks think the age of consent in Texas is 17 I dare you to sleep with a 17 year old and tell me how that works out when her parents find out. You'll find yourself in a prison cell. I know because my own adopted brother spent 19 years in prison for that exact thing. He was 24 and she was 17. He met her at a bar. When her parents found out they had the cops raid his place and he was arrested, tried, and convicted.
Whether it's right or not is a moral and ethical debate that can be had if calmer heads prevail. Keeping in mind that less than a century ago women were marrying and baring children, in this country, at 12 and 13 years old. I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying that's what it is.
I also had incident with an 11-year-old that was at least 5'7" tall and fully developed, she's over 30 today and still looks the same!I know I've told this story before but I can't find it to just link to it so I'll repeat myself.
One morning when I was ~20 years old I walked out of my apartment to the pool. There was only one other person there, dipping a toe in the shallow end. She was either visiting or new because I knew everyone in the complex who used that pool.
She was absolutely stunning. About my height, so just under 6' tall, with lithe curves of full womanhood, the face of an angel, and a lengthy mane of gorgeous semi-blonde hair. It didn't hurt that she was wearing a mostly see-through white one-piece bathing suit. I was stunned. She was a full-on supermodel and I was alone with her at the pool!
I walked over and introduced myself and tried to start a conversation. I was polite and not at all pushy. She didn't react badly. She didn't really react at all. She just stared at me for a few seconds and walked away. It was a pretty devastating "You're not even worth me wasting my breath to tell you to drop dead" rejection.
I watched and saw her go into the apartment of my friend Jerry. OK, I understood. If she was there with him, I should keep my distance.
Later in the day, Jerry is drinking beer by the pool and I compliment him on the new girlfriend. He looks confused. I describe the girl and say that I meant no harm trying to hit on her and I hope she wasn't offended.
Suddenly his face changes to alernating looks of horror and pity when he puts it all together. "No, no, no, no, that's not my girlfriend. That's my niece. Don't hit on her. She's only 11 years old."
I was gobsmacked. I had no idea how to respond.
He saw my confusion and assured me that it was OK. Their family had had to deal with exactly this situation many times. Puberty had hit her like a runaway train when she was 9. There was a huge growth spurt at the same time and the result was that she looked like she was at least 25.
Actually, it hadn't worked out well for her. She'd been forced to learn how to deflect the sometimes-overbearing attention of grown men for a couple of years and, as a result, had grown rather withdrawn, way too shy. Later, when I saw her playing with Jerry's obviously 10-year-old daughter and I heard her talking like the little kid she was, it was easy to see that she was just a child.
But that first impression!
I said all that to say this: I can't judge whether or not a person should be condemned for paying too much attention to a 16-year-old who claims to be 18. Some of them can definitely pull off that act. Until I sit and talk with the 16-year-old who was with Cody, I will withhold judgement about his moral and ethical culpability. Legally, he screwed up; no doubt about that. But as for the difference between what's legal and what's right, I consider things to be much less clear.
I knew a guy that was convicted as a minor for 'indecency with a child' for 'molesting' a 16-year-old girl when he was 15!What if you were underaged at the time and she was older?
You can both be convicted. What if you both were under age?
Texas does not have a lower-than-average age of consent; the age of consent for any sort of 'sexual performance' is 18 and long has been. The age of consent for consensual sexual activity is 17, but it can only be done in private and photography is prohibited. There are some exceptions, but they're not relevant to this conversation.
Keep in mind the age of consent in Canada was 14 until fairly recently, and last I heard was still 12 in Mexico!
You don't seem to have any concept of how 'deferred adjudication' works, and I'd strongly suggest you educate yourself before making a further fool of yourself.
I will add that Cody Wilson is a FEDERALLY prohibited person, being under indictment for a felony makes that so - and deferred adjudication is a delayed indictment.
Yup!

What section of penal code was violated? It happened kiddo, whether you believe or not doesnt mean shit to me. If the judge has it out for you you're done. My older brother served most of the prime of his life in prison for being in a relationship with a 17 year old when he was 24.
Like I said:What section of penal code was violated?
Unless she hadn't consented or they took photos/video, there is no Texas law that was violated.

I'm guessing there was some extenuating circumstances, and he didn't go for statutory rape. He's probably an RSO, why not look him up and see what he went for?Either she was under 17, or this didn't happen in Texas - unless she was mentally retarded or otherwise incapable of consent. You're being an asshole unnecessarily, but from your prior posts I kinda get the feeling that's your general personality.
Back to the topic of Cody Wilson his "deferred adjudication" and his status as a registered sex offender and currently still being on probation - the fact that he is not a prohibited person under state law is still pretty astounding - as many/most probation sentences include not possessing weapons as part of the terms, especially on felony charges.
Those going with the "he was set up" notion - IF that were true, don't you think they wouldn't have just plead shit down and done this "deferred adjudication" deal, instead of dropping the weight of the government on him, throwing him in Club Fed or at least a medium security state facility and ensuring he is prohibited under both state and federal law from building, buying, touching, or even thinking too hard about a firearm - so that when he was inevitably caught with a firearm again he just gets whisked away to Club Fed again?
It seems that while this has caused some inconvenience to him - its hardly stopped him or the organization he founded, it hasn't even lead to him being prohibited legally from possessing or building firearms. He can't be caught near schools or playgrounds I guess given his offender status - maybe that'd be the way he gets sacked at some point - but it really just seems like this guy exercised piss poor judgement and had poor hooker-selection skills. He doesn't seem like a guy short on funds - maybe a trip to Nevada would've saved him some headaches, or maybe he should've just jumped on Tinder, found some chick to bang for "free" (cost of a cheap dinner maybe) and not wound up in this shitshow.
If you're going to put a target on your back when it comes to the authorities, especially the feds - then partaking in other questionably-legal activities is probably not smart. Shit - they took down Kyle Myers for 24 grams of hash oil he got thru the mail. Myers never even got into it with the feds, he just had a popular YouTube channel that featured lots of guns, explosives, and made guns fun and popular.
You seem to show you are quite often.but I also worked in public education and realize how incredibly stupid the average person is.
He ordered from an escort service that claimed to verify the ages of it's workers.
He was the only person busted.
He was the only person charged.
You think these services don't have 100s or even 1000s of clients in a city like Austin? They were sending a message.
You seem to show you are quite often.
If correcting somebody that's wrong is 'being an asshole' - guilty as charged. You're being an asshole unnecessarily, but from your prior posts I kinda get the feeling that's your general personality.
The terms of deferred adjudication can be unique to each case, and as I mentioned he is a 'prohibited person' at the Federal level.Back to the topic of Cody Wilson his "deferred adjudication" and his status as a registered sex offender and currently still being on probation - the fact that he is not a prohibited person under state law is still pretty astounding - as many/most probation sentences include not possessing weapons as part of the terms, especially on felony charges.
Meyers was on the (B)ATF(E)'s radar for years, his YouTube channel was considered (by the Feds, not me) to be an unlicensed commercial use of explosives - and as I recall his business partner was murdered. If you're going to put a target on your back when it comes to the authorities, especially the feds - then partaking in other questionably-legal activities is probably not smart. I am bigger and better in person than I am on the Internet, I assure you - and I have a low threshold for stupidity and bullshit, which seems to abound from all the transplants on this site.People like Eli and others don't bother me too much. They're real awesome and big on the internet, they never show up to meets, they never make the events that the group organizes, and they continue to needle people online.
