    The concerns of handgun hunting:

Does your game-law-compliant gun and load have the power to kill big game humanley?
Are you man enough to take the punishment such a relatively small/light handgun and load/caliber of such necessary power may dish out? A rifle, as big, hand-filling and heavy as they are compared with pistols, can even be punishing to shoot at times. How good a pistol shot are you? How good of a stalking hunter are you? There is the challenge of being a skilled pistol marksman and the challenge of butching up to take whatever nasty kick and blast the weapon and load dishes out. Many police officers can't even handle .357 revolvers and precious few can handle .44 Magnums.

I'll ask my friend who hunts black bear with a
44mag, and get back to you....

He must be one Rambo of a man. A heap more man than me. I can't even claim such butch-ness for myself.
I could fire a rifle chambered in the mighty .300 Savage at a bear and think myself a hero.

Anyway, just hunt with whatever legal and ethical weapon you personally can handle and handle safely and effectively while humanely taking the critter. You may even choose such weapon as a special personal joy for the whole experience. You might just find a bolt-action rifle in .270, .30-06 or .308 a total bore. This is why I am now hunting for a good Savage 99 lever job to make deer hunting more nostalgic and interesting. The last deer I tagged on the horn was a yearling buck with a Browning A-Bolt II in .25-06 with BOSS and a gold-ring 1.5-6x power Leupold Vari-X II on top in 1996. A fish-barrel shoot that hunting trip was to me.

God bless, happy hunting next time you go and be safe!

You really don't have the first clue about any of this do you?

I really don't like discourage people from having guns, or getting guns, but you really might be that rare exception to my thoughts about that.

I personally know nothing about bear hunting with a handgun and have no interest in doing it myself. I was just being honest when I said I didn't want to endure the torture of a .44 Magnum for sport. I would fire a .44 Magnum in an emergency to procure meat if that's all I had. Not being proficient or knowledgeable about certain kinds of hunting as well as being gun-shy of very powerful pistols and loads doesn't make me too nutty to own a firearm.
There are plenty of gentle-shooting guns for sane citizens.

Dude, my wife shoots a S&W Trail Boss like a Boss. .44 magnum is a pussycat round in the world of big magnums.

Many of your comments show that you don't have the first clue about what you are discussing. I shoot a 44 Magnum quite a bit. As in lots. Trust me, I'm not a big guy by any standards, and have broken both wrists several times in the past.

Also your comment about the 357 Magnum. Where did you come up with that nonsense? Utter garbage. Both my nieces and my wife routinely shoot our 357 Magnum revolvers and don't have any problems with recoil. How would like to line up against my 17 year old niece with one? I'd put money on the fact I'll bet she can out shoot you!

Isn't there a knitting class you could join instead?

ETA: My wife stand 5'2" and about 145 lbs. Both my nieces are 5' or under and weigh maybe a bit over 100 lbs. soaking wet.

I did fire a .357 once at a range back in 1988 in a large-frame Ruger (GP something??) with 6" barrel. The key word is large frame gun. Not any worse kicking as any of my .45 Govt. Models but those were punishing to shoot with my elbows resting on a bench. A .44 Mag might not be too bad in a BIG HEAVY boat-anchor-weight revolver. None of those chamberings would I dare try in any fanny-pack concealed-carry gun.

I get my magnum handgun notions from this wise old gentleman, a former police captain and a former NRA firearms instructor for a police department... he is/was also an armorer for Ruger... please start video at time mark 23:00 and listen:

You're a hoot for sure dude!

I keep forgetting you are an expert on all things gun related. I'll defer to your assessments from here on out.

There's an old saying, "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, that to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

You just keep digging that hole you're in! I'm going to just sit back and watch from here on out!

.357 Magnum is a great round in a hog leg that would be too weighty for one to want to pack around all day long. A mouse gun or a compact gun, forget it.

The .38 Special was named for case, not bullet diameter. Both .38 Spc. and .357 Mag. guns have a 0.357" diameter bore.

Note: "Three-fifty-seven" was chosen because it's a long authoritative-sounding name. It's psychology. Authoritative words sounds powerful in the ear. A three-digit number also sounds like a typical centerfire rifle cartridge name to boot. Think ".257" Roberts. People are thinking they are getting "rifle power" in a handgun, I guess. It's a marketing gimmick. Add "magnum" to that already almighty-sounding 3-digit number and you have "the devil's" caliber!!

Texas big-game (whitetails/muleys/axis/cougar/bear) are certainly great targets for any future Savage 99 I might acquire. Can't go wrong w/ .300 Savage.
Go ahead and kill a bear in Texas. Let us know how that works out for you.
This statement has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are 100% ignorant at best.
