You say 8” floppies.... I think IBM word processor. Punch cards pre-date my entry into data comm. I showed up at the transition of thick net/vampire taps—->RG58 Thin net w/bnc connectors—>10BaseT and hung around until twisted pair were running 1Gb speeds and fiber-to-the-desktop was running copper out of town.

Yep. Remember high-fidelity audio on VHS tapes? There have been a bunch of interesting, dead-end technologies. There are YT channels devoted to that stuff.

My father seemed to like to invest in them.

Betamax, Laser Disc and then HD-DVD. I think he was just unlucky when it came to that.

Yep. Heck, I remember when you actually needed to verbally confirm "Hayes compatible" in relevant conversations.

Now it's time to go completely off-track with discussions of 8-inch floppies and punch cards...
I first learned to program on a remote terminal hooked up to a mainframe with a 300 baud telephone modem. Graduated to punch cards for Fortran.

Y'all will laugh, but there is a vast array of industrial equipment still running over RS-232 & RS-485 at 9600,N,8,1 - or even slower speeds. Most of the devices I play with daily are still on those serial ports.

On the Burger King here on the register display 9600 N 8 1 are visible. I’m assuming corporate polls the restaurant for daily sales records. But... geeesh.

Back in the day I used to repair just about every make of typewriter there was and
also printers , shredders and Panasonic fax machines.
Anyone have a IBM Selectric typewriter that needs repair as I have a ton of parts in my old tool case.LOL
I seem to have misplaced my “any” key. Could you send me one?
