I did not know they were AMC, but makes sense. I have heard only good things about that motor.
That's why I put it 1st on my list.
I've seen lots of them with over 250k still running
The only real issue on the 90s model was leading cracked exhaust manifold.
Once you swapped them out for stainless..no more problem

I’m late to this thread…but I found a shop near Dallas that will do an AFM delete for just under $3k, you provide the parts which is around a grand.

Im probably gonna go this route and upgrade my cams as well…I’ve got two vehicles with these bullshit lifters.

These Gen V motors really wake up with a cam.

Some of the best engineered , reliable gasoline engines I can recall are

    AMC 4.0 inline 6
    GM 3800 V6
    Ford 300 Inline 6
    GM 5.3 Vortec
    Toyota 5.7 I Force
    Toyota 22RE

    What am I missing?
    5.7 Hemi.
I've owned or driven for the company, damn near everything you listed.
    The Ford 300 is a close 2nd.
If the technology had been the same, the 300 might have been #1.
As is. The 5.7 Hemi wins. Even with MDS.

Can’t forget the 4 banger they had in the Volvo 240’s.

My dad managed to destroy a ford 300 once. I don’t know how he does it, but when he takes over a car they just age 1000x faster. I think a head gasket blew and seized up the motor, or maybe it somehow overheated. Been a long time.

I don't even remember what they were called but I once saw a documentary on that engine. Talk about over-built!

North Korea definitely chose to steal the right car.

FIFY. Bought the wife a 240 one time - solid, solid car, but was so slow it was scary. Merging into highway traffic was truly frightening.

Was it the turbo? You used to rebuild them too right, or was that just the BMW 2002’s?

In case some are interested in this..there is a youtube channel called

    I do cars.

The guy is a pretty informative source on engine reliability

He buys and sells salvage engines and cars and every Saturday he tears down an engine piece by piece and looks for weak points and tries to do a failure analysis

You'll learn alot about how so many engines are built now to only go about 100-150k

The current 4.0 liter engine in the Toyota 4Runner the 1GR-FE has a good reputation

I bought a new 81 C20 Cheyenne with the good ol' 350 V8 with 4 bolt mains and the bulletproof turbo 400 3 speed transmission and 3:53 final gears. Still got it, Has an 8' steel bed and tailgate. Many years ago I built my own custom front and rear bumper from oilfield drill pipe and a headache rack/side rails mounted to the stake pockets. When the Quadrajet got unfix-able, replaced with a Holley spread bore. I'll be 75 in a week so it looks like we have a contest to see which of us craters first.

At some point in the past it was then they went to a 3.5 v6

This 4.0 liter is also sold in Land cruisers overseas

I'd just like to say F you and your shit products.

My son's 2018 1500 Crew Cab shit the transmission in Dec.. with 112k on the odo and that cost $4500....now he is stuck in Belton with the AFM lifters failed and the shop there is trying to bend him over for almost double what I paid for the same repair on my POS 2020 Silverado in Nov last year.

I paid $6300 and that included pulling the engine because the cam was scored...
They want $8000 if no cam is needed and $10,000 if it is.
He could probably get a crate motor for that.

So his hometown shop in Keller is going to fix it for a reasonable price and I'm leaving at 6am tomorrow for Belton to go get the truck, him and his wife and baby and get tow everything back to Ft Worth

So again a heartfelt FU to General Motors for making $60,000 trucks you sell as work trucks to working people that can't make it 125,000 miles with the engine and transmission taking a dump.

Go right to Hell GM ..do not pass go..do not collect $200.
Had a similar issue with my 2023 Silverado. An injector went out at 6,000 miles and good old GM did not have any warranty parts to repair. Sixty something days later, it was finally fixed. Sat at the dealership the entire time. Unfortunately for GM, I was aware of my rights under lemon law in Texas. Settled with then for over $20K. Still have a truck that I do not trust but at least I have a piece of their !!!!!!!!!!

Good for you...I would not drive that thing 1 single mile past the factory drive train warranty with an extended warranty!
