A 30-30 retains the same energy at 300yds but drops less than half that of the 45-70. I think it's a much better choice than 45-70 if you like lever guns. Anyway, I think everyone is in agreement that 45-70 is fine for deer hunting, as long as the hunter does their part.

Thinken about borrowing my cousins Marlin Guide gun with a Lever gun scope from Cabelas, question is this. Is it to much gun for Texas Deer?

There's no such thing as too much gun. Unless it involves your shoulder. I hear that the Marlin guilds kick like all get out. The 444marlin is a mule kick. The 45-70 isn't the softest of them either.

    This poor-poor mule deer(lol) gets a 50bmg...

This doe looks like she gets the finger of God with a 50bmg(there's a quick snap shot of her ass, or whats left of it at the very end):

    And here's a 45-70 on a doe:

I say go for it. As long as you feel competent with your skills and are familiar with the practical limitations of the 45-70, have fun. Personally, I find the bigbore guns (.45+) fun as hell on the lil' piggies;)

Actually I've never had much meat damage when killing deer with a .45-70; I've killed three. The .270 or any of the magnums will cause more wasted meat.

    True that

270 will tear their ass up. Of all the rounds Ive sent down range at deer. 270 is my fav. The first time I used a 270. I punched the deer in a chest front the front. Down he went. The lung spray wasn't the cool part.

    This was:

Blood had shot out his nose(with chunks). In at least a 4' funnel. Not just a little spray. It looked like a coke can full of blood had been shot. 270 is one badass mother scratcher.

Took a nice Axis buck with My 45/70. Dropped him right in his tracks. I use the Hornady Leverevolution loads. Quite confident out to 100 yards. Past that you get a large increase in bullet drop.

I shot a 150 lb hog one time with a Ruger #1 in 45-70 and a Winchester 300 grain factory load at about 35-40 yards. The bullet hit the broiler room, exited, and flipped him completely over in the air. He was dead upon landing on the ground, DRT.

So yes, I'm a big fan of the 45-70 round.
