Shitty news. I hate the government. While I worry about people abusing the photo capabilities, the government has no business here. We need good old fashioned wild west justice back.

The photo capabilities are greatly exaggerated for consumer level multi rotors. There are some that can do amazing things, but they are $10k investments and probably beyond what most peeping toms are willing to spend. You can also find that most "peeping Tom" claims have turned out to be cases of mistaken intention. example: there was a woman who called 911 because she woke up to find a "drone" spying on her through here 13th floor bedroom window. Front page news of the evil drone infestation. After a very short investigation it was determined that it was being used to inspect a construction project taking place across the street and the video and flight log showed absolutely no interest in her or her building. That was back page news.

All they had to do was put some sort of restricted airspace over private property for so many feet. That would give some grounds for addressing peeping toms and nosy neighbor's (ETA: and police)

As long as I have the right to shoot down drones hovering over my backyard w a camera then I don't really care about the rest. The ownership of that airspace should be defined the same as mineral rights so it's unambiguous.

See above regarding peeping toms. I can see some merit in the airspace discussion, but there's probably a whole nother threads worth in that.

Shooting down: as of now there really isn't any legal grounds for shooting a drone outside of normal self defense situations in which I don't believe it would be covered. Especially since the FAA likes to consider them aircraft now. Not debating rights here, just legalities. The other issue is similar to above, you have to know what they are looking at. Not really hard to tell, if they are close enough to see anything then you should be able to clearly see where the camera is pointing. This side of the topic usually gets heated pretty quick. Especially when less reasonable people start chiming in.

The issue I can see with low altitude restriction is that many people can't judge they height for shit. Many claims of "a drone hovering 20 feet over my back yard" have been proven false by flight logs.

At any rate, nothing proposed will actually deal with the concerns people have, just like the feel good gun control proposals we see. The difference is that we (those who fly them) haven't spent enough time showing people how it really works in order to combat the media hype.

Of course!!! After all, I need to have some evidence if you use them to commit a crime.

Like flying an unregistered, improperly marked drone with out a license and annual inspection or proper insurance coverage? (All requiring fees of course)

At this point they have only created a "task force" that is supposed to give a report by Nov 20th. The FAAs goal is to have new regulations in place by Christmas in order to head off an expected surge in ownership due to holiday sales.

I have my doubts if they can do it that quick. If they do, I can't imagine what a clusterfuck it will be.

Here is a list of what the FAA was wanting in Feb 2015 but wasn't able to implement, I suspect these are the things their task force is supposed to be finding ways to shove down our throats. And it doesn't look good. As with everything, Registration is the first step to enacting much of what they want.

I'm gonna paint my drone tan and give it a little sombrero.

It won't be illegal, just an undocumented flier.

I didn't say it was an issue now, but I fear it will be. $10k now will be $1k soon enough. As all technology progresses, down comes price.

Police in Weatherford are investigating residential burglaries where each home burglarized has had a drone spotted within a block. Coincidence? Probably. Possible? Yes. There will ALWAYS be a minority that abuse, but having recourse against those few that do is all I care about. Flight logs will be kept by the honest only. I think drones will become a much larger part of society in the future, for good and bad.

"And while these new rules are a great start"

Are they kidding? Or are they too stupid to see what this is!? You would think a company that MAKES these "aircraft" would know how bad this is for them.....but that's what I get for thinking!

And don't get me wrong, I have nothing against drones. I'd love to have an autonomous drone activated by motion like a game camera. Motion detected, drone takes flight and tracks the movement. I'd love to know where the pigs on my property travel.

    This is awesome.

Doesn't the gov have better stuff to waste time on? Or a holiday? Or vacation time? This is like the powdered alcohol debate from 2014, no one should care. It's not really an issue.

I think some will cave quickly (if they even resist) to insure they can continue selling in the U.S.

The gun industry has been back stabbed enough times to know better, the RC industry will find out soon enough.

    Yeah the licensing is BS.

I just see the invasion of airspace as a property rights issue. I would assume I own my airspace for so many feet above the ground and flying over is trespassing.
