Around about 180 years ago, give or take, a young blacksmith named Jeremiah left his home village of Innishannon in County Cork, Ireland and boarded a ship, probably in Dublin. After a long sea voyage, Jeremiah reached the United States and found himself in Georgia, where he set up shop for himself, blacksmithing as he had back in Ireland. Eventually Jeremiah married and had kids, including a son, William Arthur.

William would move to Texas at some point. His wife Atha Caroline would give birth to several children, including a son named Miles Henry.

Miles would marry twice. His first wife, Rose Lee, would die young, but not before giving birth to a son, Fred Carlton.

Fred would grow up to be a farmer in Crosbyton, Texas. He would marry Mattie Dura Potter and before his death they would have three children together: Fred Carlton, Margie Dean and Henry Allen.

Allen (nobody who knew him called him "Henry") and his wife Gay would have four children including my sister and me...

The crazy guy who's learning to be a blacksmith like my great, great, great grandfather Jeremiah.

My wife occasionally does some genealogy research. She's the first one to actually trace one my my ancestors back to an actual location in Europe.

The actress CCH Pounder is actually using her real name. Carol Christine Hilaria Pounder. I always thought that HAD to be a pseudonym.

Gas prices are down considerably from last summer (but they were no bargain then). They likely will continue to drop, due to reduced demand. I don't like to link to CBS news, but this is what I got:

Level of the U.S. strategic petroleum reserve when Biden was sworn in: 638,085,000 barrels. The SPR as of the end of last June: 373,072,000 barrels.

Good thing there's absolutely no chance of an emergency that might impact the world oil supplies. Oh, I dunno, like a war involving Russia or war in the Middle East.

This might've gone in the Music thread, but it's here. Unbelievably in late 60s, in Dallas, a group decided that their lead singer sounded like Bob Dylan, so they tried to get famous. Never made the national hit list.....

My daughter spent 2 hours at the tax office getting her tags renewed yesterday. When I asked why she didn't do it online, she didn't know you could do that and how would they get a copy of the inspection report? I thought us boomers were old school vs Gen Z.

This will be something the folks at TGT know, but it's a sign of the of depth of information possessed by 2024 voters.

I had a conversation yesterday with my long-time friend who lives in Sacramento and who has moved farther left and more hardcore democrat with seemingly each election.

She brought up Trump as an existential threat to our democracy, echoing the umpteen dimo advertisements and political soundbytes.

So I asked her: "When looking at the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the other 17 Amendments, how many times is the word 'democracy' mentioned?"

Her guess was, "About 20, give or take."

When I told her the correct answer is, "Exactly zero; the word 'democracy'--or any variant of it--is in none of those documents," she, unsurprisingly, didn't believe me. I told her to go read, carefully, all of the text involved and get back to me, to tell me where she found "democracy."

I don't expect to hear back from her on this issue.

You should've asked her how many rights the Constituion grants us while you were at it. A lot of people don't know the number...which is exactly zero. I've upset a few people's worldview by pointing out that rights are considered to be pre-existing in the Constitution, and nowhere does it say "the People shall have the right to..." anywhere.

    Correct.

Most of the writings by the authors/signators of Constitution stated the Document was designed/intended to LIMIT Government....

The very wording of the Bill of Rights shows it. Nowhere does it say "the People shall have the right to" or "the right to X is granted", it says "Congress shall pass no law regarding" and "shall not be infringed". Nowhere does it even imply that government is capable of "granting" rights. They were smarter than the current population by far.

It is said that JFK called a meeting of all the "best & brightest" to the Oval Office.

Told them, together........?? They were almost as smart as when Thomas Jefferson sat there. By himself.
