You might know all you neighbors, but there's also delivery drivers.
The only time my neighborhood had a rash of burglaries was after a big storm. Lots of people got their roofs replaced. Many of the roofing crew members seemed unduly interested in what was in the back yards around their work sites.

Within about a month, almost a dozen homes had been burgled. That's almost 10% of the neighborhood.

Yeah, no2gates has a good point about worrying about non-neighbor snoops.

Only you know the "vibe" of your neighborhood.

If it is Karentown and has an HOA that they can weaponize, then I'd open garage door a foot to shield projects from view.

    <>

My very quiet & conservative Cousin had such a hard time from his Sarasota HOA, that he ran for and served as its President a couple years, shutting-down its Karens. He said numerous folks quietly thanked him for doing so.

When we moved into this house, I eventually learned my Gun Room was a featured stop on my wife's tours.

I stopped it cold when I caught it happening. Stopped it a second time when she thought "but it's so and so." Took her in and had her count the chair. It is not a social space. Nobody needs to know what I got.

My neighbors have seen me open carry when I walk my dog. They know we are armed. That's plenty of neighborly disclosure.

    This^^

I actually thought this post might be a joke at first.

Really? Do whatever the **** you want to in your OWN garage. Have we gotten to the point where we're worried that our neighbors might think poorly of us for owning firearms?

If you owning and/or working on weapons on your own property offends someone, they can **** right off.

    Good grief.....
It's not about offending anyone.......why would you advertise what you have and possibly make yourself a target for a burglary?

    A) Working on your firearms in your garage isn't advertising anything. Not sure where you got that. I do it all the time and no one knows what I'm doing unless they walked into my garage when I'm doing it.

    B) Even if it was an advertisement, as you say, as a burglar, the last place I'm going is the place that I know is armed to the teeth.

Point is do whatever the **** you want on your own property as long as it's legal and don't fucking worry about it. The fact that people are getting skittish about even working on firearms in their own garage due to what others might perceive tells me they (meaning the other side) are making progress.

Most of us aren't contesting if we care what the neighbors think.

But that's fine, keep showing every person that goes by what you have. Most of us think that's a bad idea.

It comes down to the same reason that you don't see rifle racks in back windows anymore.

It's Texas, there's a good chance there are firearms in any house given the Lone Star State has over 1 million guns (more than any other state) for its 29 million residents...

While I'm all for OPSEC, I regularly clean guns in my garage for numerous reasons.

I also do a lot of other work in my garage, so I doubt my neighbors or any other observers could really distinguish the fact I am working on firearms or rethreading my weedwhacker!

And if they did, they don't learn where I actually store those weapons.

Luckily, most of the time someone is at our house so there's no indicators that the house is safe to burgle. Plus, we live on a cul-de-sac, which is always a deterrent.

As for the "sensitivities" of any snowflakes that may be around, most of my neighbors are well aware of my background and current occupations (they regularly see me in uniform), and welcome it! There is also a retired USN CPO who additionally can bring backup if needed.

You can never have too many friends in a firefight!

When my Father in law died I had the ownere of the local gun shop appraise all of the firearms he and his brother owned. I set up a folding table in the garage, opened the door for air flow and let the inspections begin. It took most of the day with traffic going by. The world did not end and no the BATFE did not get called. Ain't Texas great!

I would not even think about it at my daughters house in Austin though. I reall wish she would move out of there and get a house in Texas.

    Out here by the lake!
No matter how great the neighborhood there always will be that gay couple from commiepornia. I moved here during icepocolypse and thought it was the coolest place with the greatest neighbors. Having been here a while I can honestly say there will always be a minority fringe in a neighborhood that is anti gun and might very well swat your ass.

We had a few of them, but when the wildfires went through in 2011 burning 32,000 acres and nearly 1700 structures destroyed, the police could not possibly keep the theives out of all of the areas after we were all let back in. It was the armed folks in our neighborhood that set up checkpoints at all intersections to the main road that kept the looters out. After that, I can only think of one libtard that still remained a PITA, but nobody pays attention to that little turd anyway.

Working on my guns on my workbench in my garage doesn't show anyone jack shit unless they walk up into my garage. Not that I give two fucks about anyone knowing that I own a gun or 30.

What the **** has happened with some of y'all? Good gracious.....

The HOA “Karens” abusing authority is a common problem.

The idea of a HOA is to maintain property values and civil harmony in the communities they serve.

BUT, as we all know “power corrupts” !

    Three random thoughts:
    • Any management company that makes a fee for each violation documented is structurally incompetent. Avoid them like the plague.
    • It's within the authority of the board to exercise judgement and choose not to enforce any rule they find arbitrary and/or outdated and/or with a history of abuse. Theoretically, my HOA can tell me what kind of appliances I can install in my kitchen but they're on record as saying they won't enforce those parts of the deed restrictions.
    • Actually putting an HOA out of business and/or killing off all the deed restrictions is tougher than most people realize. Most HOAs were set up by people that wanted to make sure they were immortal.
If we don't have an HOA thread around here, someone should start one and this stuff should all go there before it completely derails this thread. I know I'll be happy to move this post to a more suitable thread.
