    In the woods...
I'm old enough to remember my grandparents talking about living through the influenza pandemic of 1918, known as the Spanish Flu. Estimates are that 1/3 of the world population were affected and the mortality rate was about 10 percent. Between 30 and 100 million people died worldwide, with 50 million deaths being the most accepted estimate.
We all hope and pray this new Coronavirus is not as widespread or as dangerous. And I'm left with a question.

Why isn't this thing called the Chinese Flu?

Well. I guess that settles it.

    skfullen,

    • Dr. Richard Harris the infectious disease specialist of Methodist Hospital in Houston (Dr. Harris is the Team Doctor of the Houston Texans & J. C. Watts' personal physician.) is on WOAI this evening & he said that the MAIN reason that Covid-19 is NOT a "pandemic" is that MOST people, who get the virus, are NOT even sick enough to "go to the Doctor" AND that likely LESS than 1% of patients will die from the virus.
    • (That 1% is about the SAME percentage as the 1% of sufferers, who die of the "regular flu".)
At least as of now, 2100hours, 27FEB20, the "Chrono virus scare" is just that: a "media-driven" scare-tactic, which seems to mostly be a method of "selling more advertising". = i.e., MORE FAKE NEWS, imo.

    skfullen; All,

Fyi, FOUR members of our family died in 1918-19 of "The Spanish Lady", as the Spanish Flu was commonly called back then.

I have not been paying close attention to the details but of course it's all over the news so a little difficult to not get amp'd up over the subject. I didn't hear the entire show but Michael Berry had a Doctor on this afternoon and some of what he said allayed my fears. Never linked a podcast before so if doesn't work I'll try to fix it.

Edit: Jump to the 8 minute mark to skip the show intro segment.

Thanks for your replies, even though it isn't the "flu".

    skfullen,

Influenza & the various Chrono-viruses are NOT all that dissimilar from a biological point of view & the "rates of contagion" of the 2 sorts of viruses are similar, too.

Note: I am NOT a "healthcare provider" of any sort whatever, though I still do considerable reading on public health subjects.
(Had I had the money at age 21-25, I would have gone to medical school, as I really wanted to be a "country GP" way back then. - Alas, I had NO bucks, so I became a career soldier.)

It is Coronavirus or COVID-19, not Chrono-whatchamacallit.

    Coiled,

Fyi, there a GREAT MANY Chrono viruses. = Covid-19 is just ONE virus among many similar biologicals.
(Btw, SORRY, I'm NOT going to bore everyone to death with whether viruses are "living" or not, rather than simply "clumps" of biological matter that cause living tissues to reproduce the viruses.)

Yet you're the only one calling it Chrono . whatever.

    Coiled,

I refer to Covid-19 in that way primarily because MOST people have no clue as to what Covid-19 is.
As late as the 6:00 News this evening all 3 "major" TV Networks were STILL referring to Covid-19 as "Chrono Virus".

No, the media is calling it corona virus, not Chrono . . .

Just because "they" keep doing it wrong doesn't mean we should, too.

    Coiled,

So you were another "wannabe doc" with NO bucks & little or NO way to even borrow enough to even start med school??

When I graduated with a brand new college diploma, I had about 20 bucks cash to my name, so off to the Army I went.
(Fyi, my then GF, April, & I went to college on a combination of numerous odd jobs for each of us & the "fresh-dressed" catfish off of my set-hooks & trotlines, that April sold door-to-door each afternoon.)

Fwiw, we ate a LOT of pancakes, pinto beans/cornbread, cottontail/swamp rabbits that I shot & any fish that she couldn't sell.
