I thought overall it was pretty good."Masters of the Air" was decent in it's own way. It is a far third amongst "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific". I think they tried to do too much and glossed over a lot to add things that were not as important.
"Masters" cost $250-300mil + $60mil for Covid fees. I would have guessed much less.I thought overall it was pretty good.
My gripes are that it condensed a lot of time in to its run which made it a little strange to track at times. I’d be halfway through an episode before figuring it it had jumped months forward. I understand why they did it, but it wasn’t always clear it had happened.
My other grip is with some of the effects. I forgive a lot due to being interested in the story and history. I didn’t need photo realistic. It was more that a couple times they put so much on the screen at once it just became a mess, and really wasn’t all that realistic in terms of air combat. Not all, just a couple scenes. I think they wanted that big blockbuster look but it didn’t come across. And the P-51s, especially in the Red Tails mission looked horrendous. Again; not the models used so much as the way they moved. They looked like toys on a string or stick being wiggled around.
But overall it was a positive experience and I enjoyed the series. Hard to do a series like that with bombers I think. They don’t have the exciting appeal that fighters get. So taking a little license here and there is forgivable I think.
Edit to add: It’s actually surprising it was made after the major losses taken on The Pacific.
It was based on a book. Not sure how closely they fallowed the book but that could explain a lot of the story. The British woman was thrown in as a single character representation of many different women who worked in British intelligence. It was done poorly though."Masters" cost $250-300mil + $60mil for Covid fees. I would have guessed much less.
"Pacific" broke the bank at $215mil+- but, IMO, it was worth it due to the quality of the series and HBO should get their money back eventually through syndication.
HBO hasn't released actual numbers so everything is conjecture but one can make the argument that HBO was gun shy about "Masters" due to "Pacific's" performance.
Visuals in "Masters" could be downright hokey. Air battles seemed to be less important to the story besides "hey, look at all the bombers getting blown up".
ETA: I think they spent too much time on Crosby in general and we didn't need to added storyline that went nowhere about his lady friend.
The Tuskegee airmen could have gotten more screen time as escorts to the bombers and featured in some dogfighting vs the 5 min mission that got them all shot down.
Watched it last night.Watched the remake of Roadhouse this evening on Prime.

I liked the original a lot. But I can't watch a movie with that Jake G "dude" in it, or I see the poster for Brokeback Mountain. Yuck, no.Watched the remake of Roadhouse this evening on Prime.

So what's worse, a straight actor playing a gay character or a gay actor playing a straight person? The man is an actor. Plenty of straight actors have ACTED in homosexual roles.

Arnold just seems to add that extra "kick ass, charm, humor" to a movie.Love that movie.

I'm really sad there were no sequels. I'd have loved a Harry and Helen Tasker movie trilogy.
Reference the post I was responding to. Poster did not want to watch Roadhouse because the lead actor had played a gay man in a different movie. Hence, my inference to latent issues. So what's worse, a straight actor playing a gay character or a gay actor playing a straight person?
I don't think it much matters either way.
