The Judge is a handgun. A handgun with a smooth bore is classified as a handgun.

    Negative
They even call it a pistol.
ATF Online - Firearms - Guides - Importation & Verification of Firearms, Ammunition and Implements of War - National Firearms Act Definitions - Any Other Weapon

    26 U.S.C. § 5845(E)
    (e) Any other weapon

The term ``any other weapon'' means any weapon or device capable of
being concealed on the person from which a shot can be discharged
through the energy of an explosive, a pistol or revolver having a barrel
with a smooth bore designed or redesigned to fire a fixed shotgun shell,

weapons with combination shotgun and rifle barrels 12 inches or more,
less than 18 inches in length, from which only a single discharge can be
made from either barrel without manual reloading, and shall include any
such weapon which may be readily restored to fire. Such term shall not
include a pistol or a revolver having a rifled bore, or rifled bores, or
weapons designed, made, or intended to be fired from the shoulder and
not capable of firing fixed ammunition.

If you tried to make a similar 20 or 12 gauge pistol with a rifled barrel it would be defined a destructive device and subject to a $200 tax stamp because it has a bore greater than 0.50" If you made it with a smooth bore it would be an AOW and have the $5 tax stamp.
So a .600 nitro is a destructive device? I had no idea. What is a 12ga flare gun classified as? It's not advisable but you can load a shot sell in one I think the judge is a great hiking gun. First couple of chambers loaded with birdshot for snakes and the rest loaded with .45lc for everything else. ...and yes, I'd really love to have a 20ga revolver.

This isnt quite on topic, but I've always thought this was cool: MTs-255 - Wikipedia

    Same link as above.
    (f) Destructive device

The term ``destructive device'' means (1) any explosive, incendiary,
or poison gas (A) bomb, (B) grenade, (C) rocket having a propellent
charge of more than four ounces, (D) missile having an explosive or
incendiary charge of more than one-quarter ounce, (E) mine, or (F)
similar device; (2) any type of weapon by whatever name known which
will, or which may be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the
action of an explosive or other propellant, the barrel or barrels of
which have a bore of more than one-half inch in diameter, except a
shotgun or shotgun shell which the Secretary finds is generally
    recognized as particularly suitable for sporting purposes;
    and (3) any
combination of parts either designed or intended for use in converting
any device into a destructive device as defined in subparagraphs (1) and
    (2) and from which a destructive device may be readily assembled. The
term ``destructive device'' shall not include any device which is
neither designed nor redesigned for use as a weapon; any device,
although originally designed for use as a weapon, which is redesigned
for use as a signaling, pyrotechnic, line throwing, safety, or similar
device; surplus ordnance sold, loaned, or given by the Secretary of the
Army pursuant to the provisions of section 4684(2), 4685, or 4686 of
title 10 of the United States Code; or any other device which the
Secretary finds is not likely to be used as a weapon, or is an antique
or is a rifle which the owner intends to use solely for sporting
    purposes.

That is from the internal revenue code. THAT definition makes a shotgun with a barrel less than 18 inches a "firearm". Under the NFA, the Judge is a handgun because it was designed to be fired from one hand.

Clearly there are different definitions in separate parts of the USC. Under title 18 the Judge is a HANDGUN because if was designed to be fired with one hand, but under 26 it is not an AOW because it does not fire shotgun shells from a smooth barrel.

What ever happenned to the CCI .38 and .357 shotshells ? those would work in a revolver for snakes. Anywhere within 5 yrds to about 5 ft. If CCI still makes them. Thats something to think about.

So it doesn't apply to NFA?

If the Judge or Bond Arms guns had a non-rifled barrel then they would be considered AOWs under the NFA.

The Judge is a handgun because it was meant to be fired with one hand, and is exempt from AOW status because of it's rifled barrel.

THere's also the Thunder 5. Same spec's as the Judge but was made first, and was featured in the movie The Three Kings.

Remember the video of the girl shooting a 44 mag and it hits her on the head? A friend of mine took it upon himself to fix a 12ga pistol from a single shot. He shot it one handed and it smacked him right in the face. That was 20+ years ago.

A bud bought a 45/410 derringer. We went to the range, I loaded 1 .410 birdshot load took aim at the target 5' away and fired. The round butt allowed no firm grip the gun stood muzzle up in my hand and bruised the area between my thumb and index finger. The same happened to the unhappy owner. Of the 2 rounds only 3 pellets hit the sillouette target. He traded it off a day or so later

Yeah, Federal has a 2.5 length buck round that has 4 buck pellets instead of the 3 pellet count in most 2.5 lengths. The Judge 3 inch can handle the basic 3 inch buck pellets (5 per round). I believe Federal lowered the powder charge for the pistol and missing powder is filled by the 4th buck pellet.
