I don't really think there was any new information, maybe I'm wrong.
No, you're right about that. No new info there. I only linked to it because, given the passage of a little time, the summary presented therein was much more straightforward than I'd previously seen.

    So, in response to...
Maybe someone could quote pertinent parts of the article?
...I went back to it. I intended to blockquote a couple of paragraphs here so people could stop talking about the paywall and actually see the reason I thought it was worth visiting.

And now it's behind a paywall for me. SMDH.

First hint I've seen in any mainstream article about what caused the Sheriff to snap:

A critical moment came after the two men returned to Mullins’ chambers. The detective testified that Stines, after attempting to call his daughter from his own phone, requested to see the judge’s phone.

Mullins complied, and only seconds later, Stines stood up and began firing

I have to believe the judge had something stupid on his phone that involved the sheriff's daughter. Maybe pics, maybe text messages.

I don't think the sheriff killed the judge over his daughter. After all, he had no problem with women being sexually assaulted by this deputies, right?
I wouldn't be surprised if they all had a pervert conspiracy going, and he just got mad when his daughter got caught up in it.

After the shooting, Stines surrendered to law enforcement without resistance. The detective recalled Stines making a confusing remark upon his arrest.

“When he was taken into custody, I was told by one of the other officers there that he made the comment, ‘They’re trying to kidnap my wife and kid,’” he said.

    Agree, from the start.

Since it's all wild guesses at this point, here's mine:

The judge forgot he had a porn pic of the sheriff's daughter on his phone before he handed it to him.
