Actually this seems to be working. What I'm doing is heating until I see oil coming up(surface gets shiny) then wiped it down with a paper towel that is sprayed with lacquer thinner. I've got acetone so I suppose I could shift to that.

Good deal, I have always heard if you could do it without the aid of chemicals it was better!

I just kept heating and wiping until the wood did not look like it was sweating when I applied heat. I was wiping with a paper towel dampened with lacquer thinner. When the color of the wood would not transfer to the white paper towel. I start the heating process over again.... On the very edges(90 degrees from the end grain) it's still a little dark but I honestly don't think it's visible once the finish is applied and the gun re-assembled.

This show were the wood is deteriated and stained. No amount of heat and wiping made the dark spot any less. Plus the wood stayed dry when heated so I figured it's permanently discolored.

This is the top of the stock...

And here you can see the slightly dark edge I was talking about.

Any body know how to remove the safety button on a Model 61 Winchester. I have the trigger control/fire control group torn down but I can't figger out how to remove that damn safety slide. There's a little hole in it you can see from the inside. I've tried pushing a tool in that hole but nothing moved. I can rotate it and it feel like it's spring loaded but damn if I can figure out how to remove it. I've seen this style safety on other rifles so I'm hoping it's something one of y'all can solve!

    Awesome job.
This 62A dad bought new in 1955.
Best lil shooter I love it.
I would be hesitant to refurb it however.
    I prefer its character.

Dont worry the Gatling gun is a inoperative scale model. Built by my Father.

    No disrespect meant.
Mine has sentimental value so there is that.
Gun has shot an incredible amount of rounds my dad and my uncle (10yrs dads jr.) shot it alot. Uncle would shot rats at the dump etc way back when. However that lil gun will still dead ctr a poker chip from 50 yds. I dont think it will ever wear out. LOL.

And no offense taken. it's all good. I had written a lengthy response then deleted it. Though this was my Dad's gun he wasn't a hunter and I don't have memories of us shooting it together though I'm sure we did. Mostly, when I was 7-8 years old we would go gar fishing with hand lines usually the rice paddy canals around Anahuac where my grandparents lived back in the late 50's.

Will definitely be watching. My favorite gun ever is a 22 rife. Have 6 of them from autos to single shots. Have an old remington 521 that I bought in pieces for 10 dollars. Only part missing was the butt plate and that cost me 3x what the gun did. Its now one of those "itll never leave" guns
