The Swiss Air Force used to do exercises taking off and landing from civilian roads a lot, especially back when they flew Mirage IIIs. That might not have been a very unusual sight.

One of my bosses was an AF fighter pilot stationed in Europe in the 60s and had a photo like this on his wall of his airplane. Apparently it was the thing to get yourself photographed flying by a castle.
