Kerrville has a 500 yard range that they open up once or twice a month IF I remember correctly.. I think they make you turn your head and cough before they let you on it though.

Correct, Shooting sports. One of the employees there came in for pizza and he was telling me how they open it up to the public once or twice a month (I cant remember exactly). You can see it off to the left side of their road just before you get to their parking lot. I had always assumed that it was for "VIP" shooters.

Don't quote me on the 500 yard range deal, that is what a supposed emplyee told me though. They do not advertise it on their site.
