There are so many choices it boggles the mind.

I bought a new rack grade 10-22, and built a new rifle around the receiver.

Found a heavy profile match grade barrel with a Bentz chamber, mounted the barrel and receiver on a laminate stock from Stocky's Stocks, added a quick bolt release, and topped it all off with a Leupold 3x9 scope.

A 10-22 will potentially suck more money out of your rifle build budget than an AR-15.

    Be well.

Ain't that the truth. I just bought a 10/22 takedown and I've already got $600 in it and I haven't changed the stock or bought optics yet.

I have the Hogue stock and like it a lot. It's priced right too.

I hate mine. Sticks to everything....clothes, gun case, rifle rest, sand bags, face. If I ever get around to replacing it, I'll give the thing away..or throw it in the trash.

I may have to pull my 10/22 out and make some additions... It does have a bull barrel and Hogue stock, but some of those bits and pieces in this thread weren't around when that happened.

Finished the 10/22 rebuild. Kidd 20" stainless barrel, single stage trigger @3lbs pull, muzzle brake, new bolt, bolt buffer, charging handle, TacSol stock and Pic rail, and a Vortex Diamonback 2-9x scope.

    20161203_214532.jpg

Still working on breaking in the barrel but it likes CCI ammo. Last 3 shots was me just burning through the mag. Between the heavy barrel and the brake this thing has zero recoil.

What happened to the nephew helping over Xmas?

Gah, you sound just like my dad.

I was test fitting the parts and found that I don't have the tools to remove the stock barrel and install the new barrel correctly. The gun shop near me had a smith that had some time available so I took advantage of it.

LOL...i was asking because I too would have a hard time waiting. :)

Tools...don't you just need the right size hex key/Allen wrench to remove and install a barrel?

Bought my first 10/22 a couple weeks ago and I have fell in love with rimfire. LOL I went with a take down version and trying to not dump "a lot" of money into. I want it for a SHTF grab bag rifle. With that said; I love the KIDD auto-bolt release and extended mag release.

I do have a 2017 goal of building a 10/22 from scratch. Watching YouTube video of the various of 10/22 builds has me itching for something of my own.

You guys have got me looking through the back of my safe again wanting to get out the old 10-22s.

This one has a few of the same mods you all are mentioning with the difference is I just moded the original factory parts to make it auto bolt release and I stoned and polished the trigger pieces myself to get what I wanted. I don't think it's in this picture but it's got an extended mag release I made from a 22LR shell and an adjustment screw to set the trigger over travel. I just drilled and tapped the trigger guard and put an adjusting screw through there with a lock nut to limit over travel. Same Hogue stock as mentioned previously only mine is green rubber. I like it, no trouble hanging on to that thing.

I think that's a Green Mtn barrel but I'm not sure, it's blued, bull barrel, rifled specifically to shoot the Aquila 60 grain heavy bullets. I had that cut a couple inches, threaded and recrowned, with a thread protector made from the left over barrel length.

Been a while, pre 22 shortages, since I've had it out but I was really surprised how well that rifling handled every kind of weight and velocity 22LR I put through it as well as the sub sonic heavy Aquila.

Here's mine and a sight in target at 75 yds. ER Shaw barrel and VQ trigger and other stuff I don't recall. Ammo is the critical part of the whole build. You can put a lot of money in it for sure but it is a tack driver with the right ammo.

That gets the v-block off, but the barrel is a resistance fit. A brand new, never fired rifle is going to be a pretty tight fit. I was able to use the bolt to move the barrel a few thousandths, but couldn't get the barrel all the way out. Also had a problem getting the new barrel in and indexed correctly, mainly due to lack of the right tools.

Well, the nephew came by and left alread. The airline cost us three days as they kept cancelling and delaying the flight, but we were able to get out to the range in between snow storms. This is pretty much the first time he's fired a rifle. His dad gave him a .22, but the kid has only been allowed to shoot it one time, which seems like a dick move on dad's part.

He loaded up the rotary magazine and I let him burn through it quickly just to get all the excitement out of his system. Then I had him start slowing down and working on the fundamentals.
    20161221_130529.jpg

Not bad, I think with more practice, that group can tighten up a bit more. After spending time with the .22, we had him try out a few of our other rifles as he's coming with us to hunt hogs in April. I brought along the wife's Tikka .308, her Ruger 30-06 guide gun and my Tikka 300 WSM just in case he was doing well with the more powerful rounds.

Turns out that he did best with the .308 and pretty badly with the 30-06 despite the Ruger havng a muzzle brake. I think it's because the .308 is a youth model and the 30-06 is a full size, he was having problems getting a good cheek weld. He's only 13, so I'm sure he can grow into it. He said that the recoil on the .308 is about at his limit as to what he can tolerate, and he admitted this sheepishly. I told him there's no shame in saying that a gun is kicking your butt and he still was able to shoot a sub-MOA group with it. When he has a hog in his scope, he's not going to feel the recoil anyway.

100 yard group with the Tikka .308
    20161221_140501.jpg

His mother isn't a big fan of this shooting and hunting thing, but she said that he needs to try things out and decide for himself, which is probably the best answer in the world.
