Man Charged With Scratching His Name onto the Alamo
A 22 year old man is held on $20,000 bond on felony charges after police said he etched his name into the limestone walls of the Alamo during a visit to the historic site in San Antonio, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
"An individual was observed by an Alamo tour guide inside the Alamo church in the room known as the Monks Burial Room desecrating the wall using a car key," said Mark Adkins, the chief of the Alamo Rangers, the law enforcement agency that patrols the Alamo and its grounds.
He said the word 'Julio' was etched into the limestone inside wall of the 250 year old building, approximately three inches by one inch in area.
Bexar County Jail records show Julio Perez, 22, a native of Mexico living in Laredo Texas, is charged with Second Degree Felony Criminal Mischief, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Adkins says due to the historic nature of the Alamo, experts will have to be called in to properly remove the etching and clean up the area, and he estimated the cost of the damage at $250,000.
