Wow, hard to fathom... I've carried a pocket knife of some sort ever since I was about 8yo

I've got lots of nicer knives, but the ones that tend to get used the most are the cheaper ones:
    -Buck Vantage
    -Kershaw Oso Sweet
    -Gerber Fast draw

Those are three of my favorites for around $20. The Buck and the Kershaw were both nice and sharp out of the box. The Gerber had, well... a Gerber edge on it. Functional, but not that great. The knife sharpening dude at the flea market re-profiled it for $2, tho. It's much easier to keep sharp and re-sharpen now.

Get a tri-stone like this one to start learning to sharpen on: Smith's TRI-6 Arkansas TRI-HONE
Watch some youtube instructionals and just go at it. Don't be scared
Nothing wrong with using pocket sharpener like this for touch ups, either... Smith's PP1 Pocket Pal

This is one of my favorite folders, bought it years ago for $60. Cold Steel, San Mai 3 blade, Shinobu...not my pic, found on the Google.
It's still really flat in the pocket but is very stout when it locks up. Also has a harder steel sandwiched in between two softer pieces (shaper but still pliable)
