About 5 years ago a friend of mine in Michigan opened his own gun shop. He invited me out to see the shop before he opened; and I left with a Pachmayr Range Box and this Colt Commercial 1911, made in 1952 (same age as me) in .45 ACP with a complete .38 Super top end. Saving my pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars - I sent the package to Greg Derr of Derr Precision in MA to work his magic. Here are the before and after photos; Greg has graciously allowed me to use his photos whenever I want.

    Beautiful.

Did he do more than just make it look purdy?

Well yeah! Greg was a member of a US Olympic Shooting Team (forget what year) and a regular competitor and winner at Camp Perry. He worked over the action, squared things where they needed to be. Installed the rear target sights on the slides; and he made the frame to slide fit close tolerance enough that I don't have to pin the ejector when I change calibers. I just use a mini screwdriver to remove one and replace the other. Changing the ejector and thop end is all I need to do to switch from .45 to .38 Super; I also have a Colt Series 70 .22 LR conversion unit I can use too!

Bought me a moose gun for carrying in the woods of North Idaho:

Shoots pretty sweet with 45LC, recoil seems about like shooting a 22LR pistol. .454 Casull will rattle the fillings of anyone within 7 yards. 460 S&W Magnum on impact generates a small mushroom cloud.
