We have smoke alarms with 10 year batteries now. Single units now, not attached to a system. You do have to pull them down and blow out the dust occasionally.

All residential smoke detectors are wired together to alarm if a single one goes into alarm whether they are connected to a system or not.

Mrs.P refers to the smoke alarms as her oven timer.... and only one goes off....for a while....then the other....then dinner's ready.
