The bestest Ford ever at a realistic price was the 1979 Offenhauser Mustang Turbo.

Yes, plastic seats & tinny body panels, but that 4cyl blueprinted Offenhauser turbo’d engine and 5-speed were terrific.

Real racing suspension, saved my life once.

On the EasTex in the wee hours, returning from Lufkin to Houston, some genius had parked a black, lights-off car in the inside lane. Doing about 80, the car was suddenly in my windshield. One reflexive jerk on the wheel, burppp; the little car changed lanes w/o even a squeal, and I missed it by 3 or 4 feet.

    What a pocket rocket. . . . . .

No car on the Fox platform was ever going to be a good handling car, unless you completely re-fabricated the suspension. The geometry is all wrong to begin with, and there is no way to work through the compromises to make it right. Aftermarket bolt-in components will certainly help, but the factory pickup points are still in the wrong positions to do it correctly. To do it right you're cutting and welding. Ultimately you would end up with a car that looked like a Fox, but underneath it would be nothing like what Ford stamped out. I was going down that road decades back with an 87 coupe, started by welding in a full Wolfe Racecraft through-floor subframe and a 6 point Wolfe roll bar. I wanted to get the car on the road so I just said the heck with it and put in an AJE 4.6L K-member and tubular control arms in the car, and fiberglass fenders to match. That setup moves the front wheels a bit farther forward and revises pickup points a little, but it's still a compromise.

Then life caught up and the toys got sold and the house got built, marriage, kids, etc. Never finished the car, sold it all.

Oh, and yes, it was being built with an LS ;)

My '84 Mustang LX was pretty sure-footed. There wasn't a corner in Hays County I needed to slow down for, which was good - if I slowed down, that sad little 4 cylinder engine took forever to get me back up to 65 or 70. And over 75 was a pipe dream. But damn did it corner.

I had a 1979 turbo off the showroom floor.

    ETA: But not an Offenhauser.
    I'm asking...

We had two different 4 cylinder 'Stangs....

One had a turbo for sure...was easy on gas and ran well (for what it was) Could it have had dual plug heads? It was a blue coupe? If I recall?

The other had dual spark plugs...not sure if it had a turbo? It was good on gas. It was black, hatchback if I recall?

That was (before lunch, so I cain't recall) over 25yrs ago.......

I maintained both (we had some other car in between...Geo Tracker? ) Just don't recall..

I think? Can be wrong? The turbo car (Blue) had single plugs?

The late Bride liked this one (Blue)...she had a one hour drive to work at the time...mostly highway...We even put a tranny in it and had it painted. (same color)

Know for fact the Black one, with out the Turbo had dual plugs...It got real good mileage!

These were "Fox" bodied cars....Do not recall the vintages...(can see her driving them...she liked both..just the blue one she liked more for that long, for her, drive) She drove the wheels off of both of them.

I think? We gave $750 for the black one...all it needed was a set of tires...?

Maybe? $1200? $1500 for the blue one...it need something....and then a year or so of 75mph to work & back ...it needed a tranny...

    Been a long time...

Cortina was for Britain, a small car by US standards. About equal to the Voxhall. First mustang was a FALCON with different body panels.

That 4 banger turbo was junk. It was peppy depending on what car it was in. Remember the Mercury XR4TI?
That car hauled ass but it was junk I think it lasted 2 -3 years.
The motor was just too small for the Mustang,Capri and Tbird, they put it in the Escort and the Tempo as well but those may have been special order.
I believe Ford did something to save pennies and that messed up that little engine.

I got about 110,000 miles out of an Merkur XR4Ti. They were all fun miles, but far from low maintenance. I ran it across west Texas at sustained 110mph a couple times. It was amazingly stable at speed. After they started to have problems it was fast downhill. The XR4Ti had strange parts availability which was odd as so much of it was world Ford parts. The battery 2 inches from the turbocharger was the biggest single issue. Mine cooked a battery every 18 months.

The flaw of those early turbos in my hands on experience was always cooling. They ran hot, hard, and at buzzier RPMs. We were comparing them to the low rpm 8s of the day and wondering why they were a bit more fragile. They were also significantly lighter so there was a increased fun factor.

    I like turbocharging still. -s

Didn’t the Mustang SVT have a turbo 2.3 back in the mid/late 80s?
Yes, it was an early version of the current eco-boost 2.3. They had an intercooler which was rare in the day, but one could adjust the wastegate for some amazing boost impacts. Some of the SVT examples also came with metric wheels and the wild Michelin TRX tires.
