I think Vivek Ramaswamy has the best solution to the “unnecessary federal departments ” question. The departments that report to the executive branch are simply dissolved by the controlling secretary (such as the US Department of Education).

This tact would be a good start to shrinking the government immediately.
Is there a federal employees union that could prevent it? Would the hundreds of thousands employees need to be relocated into another fed job?

That would be nice! Can't see the feds transferring those our funds in 50 directions during their own death knell however.
There are no funds to transfer. The feds are broke.

Deficit is right at $2,000,000,000,000 for the fiscal year.

    National debt is pushing 36,000,000,000,000

    Unfunded obligations exceed 102,000,000,000,000

227 souls lost in the hurricane, so far. $27 million sent by FEMA. link

Wife spoke to friend who has relatives in N Carolina- she said the river rose 100 feet up the banks, wiping out many homes.

Estimates for recovery stand at $34 Billion. Another storm headed for Tampa.

I'm afraid that the totals at the end will be biblical. I've considered dragging the RV out there to volunteer.

The union members could not do anything (other than call their congressman). The subsequent issue would be having Congress disestablish the department itself since the executive branch is no longer populating the positions.
