Coming To Canyon Lake

On Tuesday the wife and I are coming to Canyon Lake for a few days. This is an anniversary/birthday getaway. We'll be doing the Hill Country touristy stuff, Gruene, Fredricksburg/Lukenbach, Wimberly, etc. Any hidden gems we need to check out? Restaurant suggestions would be appreciated.

Every brother and their dog is opening up a winery in the area.

Stop through Lockhart on the way to the hills and get some BBQ.

Bourbon tasting in Blanco and Hye. Wineries galore if you are into that. In Fburg Friedhelms Bavarian Inn and Auslander both have good German Food. Auslander has faster service while friedhelms is a bit more older style. Hike Enchanted Rock. And of course shopping in The Big Town. Also Boerne has some charm

You might find it worth coming to Austin to see the military museum at Camp Mabry if you've never seen it. It is very nice. Lot's of displays.

If “Log Haus German Restaurant” @ New Braunfels is still open it is a “don’t miss”. But skip the menu & go straight for the apple strudel.

Krause's in downtown NB has tasty brunch stuff. Italian Garden on 306 in CL is good.

If you get to Gristmill the onion rings are amazing!

There's a chance of rain this week so be very careful if it rains a good amount. Flash flooding is a real danger especially on the FM roads around there.

I like Auslanders in Fred, and theres a good catfish place downtown. Hilltop Cafe (closes at 2) is very good, west of town.


Allergy season goes year round it seems down there. Cedar is bad. Take allergy meds.

I will second the Huisache Grill. We met friends there the other day and had a great time, a great meal, awesome service, and the price was very good for what we had.

Huisache Grill has a relatively wide menu selection.

We went to Gruene about 4 years ago and ate at the Gristmill. We enjoyed it and may go back. Thanks to you folks we have some more places to check out.

If you've never been, Black's BBQ in New Braunfels is worth a visit.
