    MAMMOGRAMS, ANYONE ?

Although I got out of the professional aspect of female breasts decades back, I still have some interest.

The ‘’October Breast Month’’ & annual screening mammogram campaign has become so hyped & over-commercialized that I must speak up.

Yes, “screening” mammograms do save lives. But, Houston, we have a problem.

The “Pap” smear was established as a part of Women’s yearly physical exams, and has been proven time & again. It and its timing are very appropriate.

Then came screening mammograms, which also saved many lives.

But, for most Women, making them an annual event attached to Pap smears & Doctor visits was extremely inappropriate.

Here in the USA about the proper number of screening mammograms for population are done annually. Problem is that half of our Women get twice as many as they should and the other half of our Women don’t get any.

We see so many inappropriate mammograms.

My opinion is that for most Women, this should be done only every other year. I spent years in this field, albeit part-time.

For Women who had breast cancer theselves, or have a strong Family history, or have been genetically tested as positive; they need to be under sub-specialist’s care.

For most women, who have none of the above, they should have one mammogram around age 40, then one about every 30 months.

IMHO the ACS, American Cancer Society, & the ACR have folded, or partly folded, to political pressure to have ‘’annual” in their recommendations for non-high-risk Women.

    “Komen” is way out-of-control.

How many realize that too-frequent mammograms can CAUSE breast cancer ?

I say this: Don’t insist on an ANNUAL screening mammogram. If you have no high risk factor but your Doctor insists on an ANNUAL screening mammogram, get a better Doctor.

This is a rant on a gun forum, not specific medical advice.

Not too make light of cancer. One of best friends is battling it now.

My friend's and I use to walk around the quarter on fat Tuesday in scrubs with signs around our necks reading free mammograms. That was a good decade

This is one of the poorest medical recommendations by a doctor given. One in eight women will get breast cancer and if we believe that early detection saves lives than delaying mammograms is dumb. Perhaps we should be pushing MRI and sonograms more. I have known so many women that are dead because of breast cancer. Anything that can catch it early is what we need. Proof that there is some bad advice given by a doctor. Stick to guns.

My youngest sister is alive today because of an unexpected mammogram.
She did one of these and a small lump was found.
Caught very early the lump was successfully removed and she has been cancer free for over five years now.

Of course, I’m not against “mammograms” nor screening mammograms.

I just would like to see their use more evenly distributed among our at-risk Women. Half of our at-risk 45+ y.o. female population have never had ONE screening mammogram.

Indeed, I’ve picked-up dozens of early breast cancers in the 20 or so years I was in the field.

But this is not as simple as some suggest.

How often should we do mammograms? Once a month? Once a week? LeVieux is talking about asset allocation. He's not saying mammograms shouldn't be done.

One trip to Nola I had convinced a coworker to pick up the egg, that had fallen out of his egg sandwich, that landed on bourbon Street to put it back on his sandwich. Luck for him one of the girls in the group told him to not eat it. Iirc the egg splashed in bourbon gravy when it hit the street.
