MAMMOGRAMS, ANYONE ?
Although I got out of the professional aspect of female breasts decades back, I still have some interest.
The ‘’October Breast Month’’ & annual screening mammogram campaign has become so hyped & over-commercialized that I must speak up.
Yes, “screening” mammograms do save lives. But, Houston, we have a problem.
The “Pap” smear was established as a part of Women’s yearly physical exams, and has been proven time & again. It and its timing are very appropriate.
Then came screening mammograms, which also saved many lives.
But, for most Women, making them an annual event attached to Pap smears & Doctor visits was extremely inappropriate.
Here in the USA about the proper number of screening mammograms for population are done annually. Problem is that half of our Women get twice as many as they should and the other half of our Women don’t get any.
We see so many inappropriate mammograms.
My opinion is that for most Women, this should be done only every other year. I spent years in this field, albeit part-time.
For Women who had breast cancer theselves, or have a strong Family history, or have been genetically tested as positive; they need to be under sub-specialist’s care.
For most women, who have none of the above, they should have one mammogram around age 40, then one about every 30 months.
IMHO the ACS, American Cancer Society, & the ACR have folded, or partly folded, to political pressure to have ‘’annual” in their recommendations for non-high-risk Women.
“Komen” is way out-of-control.
How many realize that too-frequent mammograms can CAUSE breast cancer ?
I say this: Don’t insist on an ANNUAL screening mammogram. If you have no high risk factor but your Doctor insists on an ANNUAL screening mammogram, get a better Doctor.
This is a rant on a gun forum, not specific medical advice.
