I am wanting to buy a Bowie knife. Not because I want to chop somebody up, but because they are part of Texas history. Looking at the laws, it does not seem to be Illegal to own one, as long as you keep it on your own property. Am I correct on this? I am more or less looking for an ornament.

Correct. You just cannot carry it on your person unless you are on your property or property under you controll or in route to your vehicle.

also keep in mind the original bowie knife was simply a large flat straight spear-pointed blade that was modified to a clip-point. Wasn't really a whole lot extravagant about the original bowie knife. I think we have Hollywood to thank for a lot of the designs that have come out in recent years.

McBride's in Austin has a Browning Bowie Knife with wood grips that were made from an Oak tree from the Alamo grounds. If you want a conversation piece, that'd be it.

Bowie knives are considered dangerous weapons by Texas state law.Look under penal code.Search for knife.Sounds kind of funny that a state known for Bowie knife makes them illegal.Switchblade laws have changed also. You can now own them as a collector only, except for LEO&EMT.Do not carry or will have a roommate that thinks your cute.LOL

I suggest the Glock 6 1/2" fixed blade field knife. At $28.95, the blade will skin three deers before sharpening. I got one yesterday at GT dist, here in Austin. 512-451-8298.

True, It will be only a hunting/camping knife at that length being over 5.5". I use a Gerber Gator folder for everyday protection.

Bowie knives have a place in Texas history and beyond. Having one in your collection gives you a more personal connection. This one, a Kinfolks V-44 is a WW-II example.
