Best Ammo for a Ruger 10/22

I use mini-mags for hunting. They are good enough and fast, so they tend to work alot better than the sub-sonic match ammos.

Stingers work alright in the normal 10/22s but they should not be shot out of guns with match chambers like the "Target" models. They have an elongated case that can be a safety hazard in a tight chamber.

The Quick Shoks are a segmenting hollow-point and work awesome on light game. I highly recommend them for hunting; no .22 works better for that in my experience.

I like it ... it's a great scope for the money. I'd like to do a comparison to my Dad's Nikon though.

My 10/22 Target gets Wolf Match and about nothing else. My 10/22 Target will shoot about a dime sized hole at 50 yards with 5 shot groups, so placing the shot is not hard, and placement is what counts far more over caliber.

My 10/22 will digest about anything but the absolute best is CCI's.....The two absolure worse were some Junior from Russia and American made Federal ammo.

Quickshoks run fine in 10/22s. I once shot a golf ball with it and it worked just as advertised, 3 evenly spaced segments that almost fully penetrated. The stinger ammo doesn't because the aluminum casing is longer than brass cases(like TX1911 said). I get "acceptable" results from WMs federal bulk packs but get better peformance from Eley Sport(mexican stuff in a purple box). If I want serious accuracy the go-to is Wolf MT. It is the standard by which all others should be judged. If you plan on zeroing at 50yds but shooting out to 100yds or more, you might want to stick with High velocity stuff. Standard velocity ammo is much more accurate than HV stuff but drops about 8" from 50 to 100 yds vs. about 3"(HV drop).

Great review! I found that my 10/22 would eat anything I fed it. I did notice the Federal bulk boxes were the most inconsistent at the range (5" @ 50 yrds).

I had a similar idea of doing some ammo testing to see what worked best in my Ruger 10/22 rifle and MkIII 22/45 pistol. I went to the range on Saturday and shot several different types.

For the rifle, 2 stood out, giving me much tighter groups than the others. These were Aguila Match and CCI Std Velocity.

Here is how I ranked them:

Aguila Match A
CCI Std Velocity A
Federal Premium Target B+
Fiocchi Std Velocity B+
Federal Champion B
Winchester Bulk 333 C
Federal Auto Match C
Winchester SuperX D

In the pistol testing, the Aguila Match and CCI Std Velocity were also the clear winners. The Federal Champion and Winchester SuperX were definatley the poorest.
