AWOL Soldier Arrested For Planning Attack at Ft Hood

(CNN) -- FBI agents discovered a bevy of bomb-making materials in the hotel room of an AWOL soldier who was arrested near Fort Hood, Texas, the military base where a 2009 shooting spree killed 13 people, a Defense Department official told CNN on Thursday.

Pfc. Naser Abdo, a Muslim American who refused to deploy to Iraq and later went AWOL after facing child pornography charges, was arrested by police in Killeen, Texas, just outside Fort Hood.

Killeen police received a call from a gun shop owner about a suspicious man in the store who was asking questions about .40-caliber ammunition and then bought three boxes of 12-gauge ammunition and a magazine for a pistol, the defense official said.

He paid cash and departed in a cab. He then went to a surplus store and allegedly bought a military uniform.

FBI agents searching the soldier's hotel room found gunpowder, shotgun shells, 18 pounds of sugar, a pressure cooker, four magazines and ammunition, the defense official said.

A statement on the Fort Hood website acknowledged Abdo's arrest but said it had no connection to the base.

"We are aware at this time that Killeen Police Department arrested a soldier yesterday. The incident leading to the arrest did not occur on Fort Hood and the soldier was not a Fort Hood based soldier," the statement said.

Abdo was assigned to Fort Campbell in Kentucky.

Hasan is in the Bell County Jail. I have family and friends that work on Hood, and I really don't like this sorta thing. This Abdo dude I guess had put up on his web page "I can't believe I am Muslim and going to deploy" . He had been awaol since July 4th. He went to Guns Galore the same place Hasan bought his weapons but I am pretty sure they keep a good eye on customers now. About a month ago a guy went in there and apparently had ammo with him and shot himself in the head, passing away a few days later.

Agreed and my spouse works on the base, I go on it weekly. I have noticed a bit more security the last 4 months or so. Then about three weeks ago, seemed like they were really making sure who you were when you entered in the base. I don't want to say more but it was like they were on the look out for someone that wasn't who they said they were. Now Abdo joins Hasan at the Bell County jail. Glad that Guns Galore were on their toes and reported this. They took a bad rap a month ago when a 20 some individual came in looking and handguns then loaded and shot himself here, passing a few days later, he wanted to commit suicide badly. The same shop where Hasan bought his weapons and I would guess this gun shop gets a lot of soldier business its about 3-4 miles out one of the gates. He has a video of himself and also states that "I can't believe as a a Muslim I am going to deploy", He'd been AWOL since July 4th. That's about the time security seemed more interested as who was going on base.
