I noted with some humor that they disallowed the .17HMR at 200 yards......

After a snicker I did have to wonder TWF?
    What for??

    BTW

Anybody have experience with the little 17 Hornady Mach 2 (17HM2) ?
    Necked down 22lr.
Great, accurate, gentle 2,100 FPS round.
Pretty much a defunct market failure, perhaps due to superiority of the 17HMR.
If ammo is seen it's 200-300 a brick!
    And
While I'm at it, any experience here with the 17WSM, a necked down .27 caliber nail gun blank, more velocity for more $$$.

Good question! I dug out my match records to give you a true idea of what that .17HMR can do. These are actual scores. The "X" ring at 200 yards is the size of a golf ball.

Marlin 917V .17HMR 200 yards from prone. $30 Tasco scope.
    499/500 28X High Master
    500/500 23X High Master

AR-15 20" .223 at 200 yards from NRA positions, service rifle class. Iron sights.
    473/500 7X Master
    470/500 13X Master
    470/500 9X Master

The .17HMR will lay down Master to High Master scores all day, every day at 200 yards. It's easier to ban them to compete against them.

    Shot mine today again.

    Hornady 17gr ammo
400 feet with a so-so rest but pretty good care given the trigger.
    2" wide 1" high 6 shot group.
    I LOVE that little Savage.

    Question..............
Is there much point in a 17HMR pistol.
I almost owned one a few yours ago.

Nice guy was walking the gun show with a Ruger Single-Six blued asking 400, saying he paid $475 plus tax.
I, being the frugal guy (wife says "cheap") offered $340. He said no.
Later I figured he'd take $380 and I had the cash but couldn't re-find him.

    So.............to the question:

Anybody here have experience with a pistol in 17HMR
As a rifle caliber a lot of us are smitten.
Is there any sense in having it in a pistol?
I love my Ruger Single-Six Stainless 22lr and shoot it lots.
With the CCI "Quiet" 710FPS it's such a pleasure and I think hearing safe while walking about.
With the 22 magnum cylinder the Ruger is loud, expensive and I don't shoot it much.

17HMR, I'd suspect would be nasty-loud from a revolver. Is it a practical pistol round?
    Any experienced opinions hereabouts?

Turtle heads aren't even a challenge, lots of fun even if they were only about 25 -30 yards away

Psssst: You can fire .17 PMC in a rifle chambered for .17 Mach2 with no problemo. Ammo here ( http://unammo.com/ )for a lot less than you think (1000rds of 20gr Open Tip FMJ for $120.00).

I guess I'm a little late coming to this thread...

    But I'm a .17 fan, too.

I bought mine back when it was still a fairly new thing. I haven't shot it much lately because ammo had gotten difficult to find but I see that it's starting to be on the shelves again. I'll buy some more, but I'm in a semi-hoarder status because Hillary is looming on the horizon.

Anyway... It's my most accurate rifle, and a joy to shoot. Like everybody has said- it's fun to watch the bullet hit and it always goes right where I want it.

    I have a 93R17BTVS with a Mueller 8.5-25X44AO scope.

I don't know why this is the only pic I have of a target- It's not the best one I ever shot. Actually it's just an average group and I'm pretty sure I can duplicate or beat this group every time I shoot the thing.

The dotted line is one inch, the dot is 3/4". that 5 shot 100 yard group is about .8 or so.

Not too bad for an off the shelf rifle and scope that was about 500 bucks, huh?
