Like a lot of us I shot many bricks of .22lr growing up.

    I've "matured" to larger calibers.....270, 9mm, 7.62....all the way to 50 BMG.

My newest love is back to a lowly rimfire and I love it.

At the last gun show I picked up a Savage 93, one of the cheapest rifles I've bought in a few years at $425.
Icing in the cake is that it came with an old, yet lovely, 6x36 fixed Swarovski Optik glass.
Icing on the icing! It's threaded and allows me to mount my little Silencerco Sparrow with no point of impact shift.

    I'm pleasantly shocked.
Rimfire 1 MOA wide and 0.5 MOA vertical groups.
Quiet to boot, just a pleasant sonic crack.

Anybody else here discovered the 17HMR?
I feel like I've rediscovered a first love!!!!

There's also .17WMR. Runs just over 3,000fps. I see it commonly at Cabelas. Kinda wish I had one.

I have a 93R17VT and love it. Haven't shot it much lately though.

I know my dad has a little savage 17hmr he got a few years ago. He swears by it. The damn thing is a nail driver at 100 yards too. He never shuts up about the thing.

And if you want to make it even better look into getting the Apachee Trigger Kit. Checkout Rimfire Central to track down details.

Went and shot the little 17 this morning.

The old Swarovski fixed 6x is just perfect. Came with it, though I'd unlikely have picked it up off a shelf.
Can see the impact on targets or water or rocks or whatever.

Yes, you mentioned the 17 Hornady Mach 2. Its a necked down 22lr, as the 17HMR is a necked down 22mag

Ammo is dried up. Saw a brick at the Dripping Springs gun show for $249!
A friend loves his Remington bolt gun in 17HM2 and has stocked up on ammo, as it, sadly, is obsolete soon.

    Very roughly:
    17HM2 necked down 22lr at 2,000 FPS
17HMR necked down 22 Win Mag 2,500 FPS
17WSM necked down .27 cal nail gun round! 3,000 FPS

The super fast WSM seems very attractive and around 35-40 cents a round a good bit cheaper that 22 Mag. 17HMR I've been finding at 30 cents a round. Some reviews criticize it's accuracy saying the hot 3,000 FPS fouls the barrel with copper. Don't know if that's true or not.

For my present shooting pleasure the HMR seems a sweet spot.

For plinking it's still hard to beat 22lr at less than 10 cents a round BTW.

    Shot mine again this afternoon.

The connection I get from seeing the impact through the scope is great.
I need to stock up on ammo just so as to not feel bad to shoot 100 rounds each outing!

Makes me sort of sad that 17HM2 is a commercial failure. Was the same projectile and accuracy for ever less recoil, report and cost. Darn.

    My first was a CZ.

I had set up a metal house for sale sign frame. Hung a round practice grenade off a chain. At 50yards, poly tips will burn though one side of the cast iron like it's armor piercing. You could shake hot bullet flakes out of the grenade. One side but not the other....

I kept seeing holes after it jumped. Thinking they were just spots. Nope, melted holes.

I have a Savage 93, sans can. Its one of the camo Bass Pro packages with a small scope they sold about 8 or 10 years ago.

My groups are similar to Orbitup. My youngest daughter has shot groups at 50 yards that you can cover with a dime. Ol' "Deadeye" is pretty good with a rifle.

My Savage 93 is in .22LR and I love that rifle with a can on it. My only .17HMR is a CZ455 with the full Mannlicher stock. Sweet rifle.
